Well, I just experienced a first after almost 30 years on the farm.

I get up fairly early and let Dottie out at sunrise. She has a morning routine that includes a tour of the Potomac and our marsh.

The entrance to the marsh is too the left of this tree with the Loon.

My home office looks out on the rear of the farm...Frank the cat approves:

So, first cup of coffee, checking admin creep when I see Dottie run across the lawn...being chased by an Otter! I wish I had gotten some pics but it stunned me a bit.

I got up and went to the garage to see what was going on. The Otter and Dottie were in the garage running around. I get Dottie in the house and through the glass door to the garage, can see the Otter as it sniffs the door jam.

No sign of distress, rabies, etc...first time I have seen an Otter up close on the farm, the size of a large cat. I close the wooden door and check D for cuts, bites, etc. Nothing.

Whew.

Back to my desk and the Otter is no where to be found. I just got back from feeding the horses and we walked up. No Otter.

Just so odd. Also, two days ago I am on my drive about with Dottie...I drive the Ranger and stop frequently so the tour generally lasts over an hour. I am playing a game on my iPhone when the biggest, whitest Skunk walks right by me, stops, looks, and continues on his merry way.

We've been learning a lot about the Great Pyrenees breed in the past few months. Mainly, they define the word stubborn. Pete hears everything you say, understands it exactly and then says to himself, 'nah, I'm not doing that right now'. Often times, he responds a few minutes later, or whenever he feels like it.

Pete needs a girlfriend to boss him around. Carmen is ready...

Otters are mean. Cute but mean. As bad as alligators around here. They can snatch a small dog, pull him under the water and drown him just like a gator does. Be careful!

Thanks Pete doesn't have a girlfriend, but he has a boss for sure. When our 15-pound Miniature Schnauzer Dante says 'jump', Pete says 'when and how high?' When Pete rough-houses with the neighbor's dog (a 60-pound Coonhound), Dante will get right in the middle of them and push them apart.

Speaking of Great Pyrenees, this little five year old is looking for a new home. I alreat have three big dogs but the wife is saying "what's one more"
Help me!
As mentioned, she is a 5 year old female, chipped, spayed great with kids and great indoors. Pretty rare for a Pyrenees. They really like to patrol their property.
She is in Marietta Ca. New baby has the house a little too crowded.

Curt I get it. We adopted a young, feral Great Pyrenees about five years ago. We have a large dog yard with a 6 ft fence (jumps it with ease) and a kennel attached to the house but Cleopatra just doesn't want to be a pet. We bread her with my Golden with the hopes that would make her a home body but 7 weeks in, she tapped out. She has a job to do and she needs to free-range.
We bring her in every few months to clean up her wounds, cut out her mats and just love on her. After 3-4 months she needs to be free. One benefit is, no coyotes on the property. The peacocks love that.

^^^ That's great! I ran into some people from TN out on a walk the other day. They have a sheep farm and 3-4 Pyrenees - working farm dogs. They were somewhat amazed that Pete was a house dog and quite well-behaved! He very quickly was house-broken, learned not to chew up things other than his toys and, most importantly for this breed, learned that barking was not allowed in our house. It's hilarious because he still has his natural instinct to bark but does this sort of highly-muffled bark when he senses something going on outside

Sorry, no pictures.

I took my wife for a trail ride date yesterday, a new place we've never been before. We were met at the gate by a cattle dog, and my wife tried calling him over for pets, but he was having none of it. Then we saw another, and another, they had at least seven cattle dogs and a very fat sheltie. We got there a little early, and it was pretty remarkable to sit and wait and watch that pack of dogs work the farm and keep all the little critters away.

One of them sat up and barked, then a couple more barked, and they all headed off in the same direction, but it was just the lady that ran the place coming out of her house. It might have been pretty close to dinner time.
