The New Normal - Death Notices on Facebook

Yep, one of my neighbors passed away yesterday. His wife posted it on Facebook, which is how we found out.

Is this how we do it now? I wonder if she sent a tweet to her followers. This seems a weird, impersonal way to notify everyone that her husband passed.

I'm on the Exec Board of a large fraternal organization. We have over 21,000 members in 24 countries. FB notices are the norm for us... 3 in the past week. One of which I had a drink with 2 nites B4 he was killed in a m/c crash....

My MIL passed away 2 weeks ago. My wife told the family no Facebook. At least for a couple of days until arrangements had been made. It almost worked, but one of the dunces posted it before they were ready.

I think it's crass. I also think emails of condolences are very crass. If you can't buy a card, don't bother.

I can understand it for something like that.

I guess finding out in the Newspaper isn't really any different. It just seemd weird to me...

I've never understood this. Buying some $3 card is a big deal to some people.

What if someone sent you an email and a few bucks? --crass? ..or Not crass?

I hate seeing these kinds of things on Facebook and that's why I closed my account over 2 years ago. Too impersonal...

My dad was in a bad bike accident recently, and FB was the primary way the family communicated about it.

In some respects it is a pretty good idea. There is that old theory that if you publish a death notice in a newspaper and the service will be held at a church, then that lets the crooks know your home will be vacant. The scumbags move in and "clean" your home. FaceBook is good for something.

FYI... just dealt with this recently

FBs process is to memorialize the account so friends can still view the account, but the deceased does not show up in searches, people you might know lists, etc..

I don,t waste much time on FB. I only have 3 or 4 contacts thru it. I recently found out an old friend (Room mate in University in 1972) has cancer. I was notified thru FB. He is in paliative care now. We live in different cities and only saw each other every 5 yrs or so. His passing will be posted in a newspaper I don,t have access to. Facebook will be my likely means of knowing. Sign of the times I guess.
