... Spain just won the Euro 2012 soccer tournament to complete a historic treble (Euro '08, Wold Cup '10 and Euro '12)
![]() Defending champions Spain win Euro 2012 to complete historic treble - CNN.com (CNN) -- Defending champions Spain claimed an historic third successive major international trophy with a 4-0 rout of Italy in the Euro 2012 final in Kiev Sunday. It was a breathtaking display from the 2010 World Cup winners, with victory all but sealed by halftime as goals from David Silva and Jordi Alba gave them a 2-0 lead. Substitutes Fernando Torres and Juan Mata rounded off the emphatic win with two late strikes. Victory in the final also represents a triumph for 61-year-old coach Vicente Del Bosque, the first man to lead teams to the World Cup, European Championships and European Champions League crowns, the latter with Real Madrid in 2000 and 2002. "This success in Spanish football is something historic, and now we have to look to the future and try to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil," he told gathered reporters. It left Casillas to lift the trophy in the magnificent Olympic Stadium, the Real Madrid goalkeeper reveling in yet another showpiece triumph for a team many are calling the greatest in history. Sunday's final set the seal on three weeks of competition in Ukraine and Poland at eight match venues and involving 16 teams. And now, back to global recession and 26% unemployment (panem et circensis anyone?). ![]() |

A great win for Spain! It was on tv on dish network. Wife was born in Spain and was super happy to see the win. 4-0 is a big win in soccer. We also watched Alonso win the GP in Valencia. Now if only the economy in Spain could get a win. The good people of Spain don't deserve what the socialists have handed them.

Thanks guys.
Unfortunately, I don't think this will have any impact on the economy. Things will be getting worse in the next months but I think the economy will eventually improve. The national team includes players from the Basque Country and Catalonia (and the rest of Spain). The nationalist parties in power in those regions have refused to install giant screens in the streets for fear of people celebrating Spain's wins. Nationalism/separatism is nowadays more a political tool than anything else. There is a famous picture of 2 ETA terrorists with Spain's jersey celebrating the '10 World Cup!!!!! |

Having been in Germany a few years ago, when the world cup was there it was eye opening and amazing to experience the level of support and enthusiasm for the teams and the games. Jumbotron TVs set up in town squares with impromptu beer gardens,
packs of fans in national team colors and painted faces roaming around cheering for their teams. Seemed the whole country came to a stop and held its breath for the important games. It was fun to be there, and far beyond any sports frenzy we have this side of the pond. You must be having a great celebration there, Congratulations on a big win and a great team! Cheers Richard |

Spain schooled the Italians. It was like watching a cat play with a mouse. Of course the injury that left Italy a man down didn't help. Congrats.

Playing a man down due to a red card sucks....but when you run out of players due to excessive substitution and then an injury....not real smart.

It is the golden game. I played on an adult league for ten years before I shattered my wrist in a fall after mincing it up with a forward.

It is a rather amazing feat!
What I care about is I could NOT watch any of the games, nothing on regular TV stateside and I'm too thrifty (read as CHEAP) to pay for satellite. Nope, no cable in my area, considered too rural. No broadband, no.................

I really got more support than I expected. See you all in the World Cup in Brazil 2014. Hope the US team makes the cut.
I wish I could watch US sports such as football or baseball but you can't get them here in Spain. |
