911's are easier!
![]() So last fall I pulled the drivetrain on my '78 (Heinz) Replaced the head studs, replaced the rings, etc, etc. put it back in the car, fired it up, broke in the rings and he's been good ever since. (3000+ miles so far) 3 weeks ago I pulled the eng and tran on my '88 Celica convertable with 130K miles, re-gasketted it, cleaned the valves, new stem seals, installed a new clutch (Main reason to pull, plus oil and antifreeze leaks) etc, etc, etc. Put it back in the car this weekend, went to fire it up, NOTHING........... No click from starter, nothing.. Pull starter, jumper it and nothing, take it apart, notice I need to replace the solenoid contacts soon (next week soon!) Clean it and dress the contacts, put it back together, install it and the car fired it up, ran smoother than ever, revved nice, I'm a happy camper.. UNTIL.... I tried to put it in gear. No way, no how was it going to shift into any gear. Not a problem with the new clutch, I saw it moving in and out properly when I pulled the starter.(checked it) I'm pretty pissed off now, so I jump in Heinz and go for a nice ride and seemed to find a deserted spot to hit 100+ mph and enjoy that. (Damn these cars are meant to be driven fast....) Stress relieved.. ![]() So, I'm racking my brain and my Toyo manuals and the internet to figure out what I did wrong. Nothing, nada anywhere I look. F%^& it! time to sleep on it..... Tonight I went to look again and had no ideas, except it worked before I took it apart, so it's something I did. (I hope, please let it be me and not the tranny) So, low and behold I find I had crossed the 2 shifter cables and the gears were now in the right- left plane, and neutral was in the up- down plane. What a Dumb a$$! An Hour later all is well and it runs and shifts great now! (An hour because you should see where these damn cables are....) Anyways, to the title of this thread: The 911 with it's simple yet quirky, sometimes sloppy but downright easy to put back together, single shift rod is now the best damn thing ever in my books!

They are super easy to work on, one of my favorite elements of the cars. High quality and excellent engineering, they use bolts and screws where others use cheap plastic snaps.

I would have left the shifter cables crossed, then gone somewhere with valet parking.

First where fifth is and reverse at second would be fun to watch the valet guy.
