I loaded it on to my HP Slate 500 - it's looking pretty good. Seems that Redmond has found a way to transition a real OS onto the fast-becoming ubiquitous capacitive touch-screened tablets. --you know, where the only pointing device is a fat finger.

Really cool picture passcode; nice clean graphics; fast, less memory needs..

The on-screen keyboards are sharp, with nice feedback, but the split-keys and TIP take up too much real estate.

Clearly they are a ways from releasing the final product, but this is looking good, IMO.

Anyone else trying out the Developers Preview?

Definitely will take a look. I used an XP tablet edition for years when I was teaching. It was pretty cool. It was an Asus model that could convert from a laptop to a tablet.

Does it run most winXP and win7 apps or is this "more of the same" software sales strategy where you now have to buy the same apps you have all over again for $500 a crack just so they'll work with the new OS?

I have a Lenovo Tablet PC currently running WinXP. Wondering if it has the horsepower to run 8. I have the Dev preview DVD already downloaded =)

It should run everything just fine if you go with an Intel chip. They are adding support for ARM as well to go for the thin/light/long battery life segment.

Back in the day when there was Intel/Alpha, that meant differently complied software for each. Not sure how that will work with the advent of the MS version of the app store.

Also, old stuff will run on the "old" desktop, and apps will have to be redone for the "Metro" desktop, which is a lot like Win Phone 7. There wouldn't be a lot of crossover anyhow, as you'd not likely want to run your accounting software on a touch front end.

So I guess the short answer is "kinda".

it runs lighter than 7 and when I loaded Some old 16 bit software it asked and installed a 16 bit Compatibility mode ...pretty slick. - the 16 bit worked/ ran fine.

This is pretty much what you get with just Win8 Dev Preview installed.

I expect that one needs to install the Dev Preview Metro Apps to get more content, as seen here....

Much of this developers stuff is 'as-is' of course, but it sure does behave nicely.

Anyhow, my terrific HP tablet PC burned up for good. Four mutha effen boards but still loved that little convertible with Win 7 Ultimate. So... after 3 years of heavy home and biz use, Best Buy refunded 100% of my purchase (by way of in store credit, not cash out), less the extended warranty. Pretty amazing considering it was well outdated but they had no alternative laptop to offer. Was considering another hybrid but never again do I want an HP product so then I spotted this:

Q's: Is Asus a reliable brand for laptops? Since my refund / credit has no expiration, should I wait for the OEM versions of Win 8?

Lastly, seems to be some confusion on this 2nd gen i7 2640m procc. It has a ? next to the listings and nobody from the store knows why. Is this quad core or 8 way?
I called Asus and although we talked, they didn't know and put me on hold for over a half hour to check it out! I gave up and dialed toned. The sales support seems weak. Here's where I was trying to get a clearification while on the phone:

According to Intel, it's a dual-core with hyperthreading, so it'll run four threads at once.

That's why in task manager it would show up with four CPU meters.

I've had good luck with ASUS stuff, usually was only motherboards, but have bought a couple of their small notebooks for the office and they've been just fine, good build quality.

They've been a component manufacturer for both OEM and high-end specialty parts for a long long time, and just started building their own full machines about 5 years ago.

Been playing with 8 for a couple of days now - posting this from 8 running on Sun Virtualbox. Seems fine so far, but the opening interface (not sure what it is called) seems completely unnecessary. Of course I prefer the old way, most do. Familiarity is comforting.

The new (desktop) interface, is much like an internet browser start up page on google, msn, etc. I never used a start page in the past so I'm not sure why MS thinks I want one now. I assume the average PC user enjoys the home pages with all the latest news, weather, email info staring them in the face. I like my system bare. Nothing on my desktop except a few select programs pinned to the task bar and a google search bar when I hit the Firefox icon.

Flop or fab?

The icons in the iPhone and iPad interface aren't static as they change to show updated information, such as number of unread emails and new voice messages.
