man..getting old isnt fun.
i used to heal so fast..laugh at cuts and bruises..hahahaha.."where is the neosporin?" hahahh.
now? ouch.."where is the bengay?" i hurt my knee, moving something very heavy and very boxy..i had young helpers, but i was being stubborn and stupid..i did most of the heavy lifting. arrggghhh WHY??? the heavy thing showed up last wednesday..it is sunday, and my knee still hurts...i had one painfree day, so i went biking. big mistake. i was very sore again. i think i pushed my kneecap into my joint..and bruised it. no real damage, none to the cartilage pads at least. not even really limping, just achey. stupid stupid stupid. i get better, i will dedicate myself to regaining some lost flexibility. enough of this schit. |
That's the spirit. Fight the good fight to the end.
|
Yeah, it hurts. I have been reno'ing my office during my 'holiday' this week. At about 1/2 the speed I was capable of 10 years ago . . .

Just gotta keep moving. I'm a bit sore in the morning, takes me a while to warm up. But, partied with 30 somethings last night, got up, rode hard for an hour, showed up a breakfast with all of them barely moving at 10. I just turned 49 a few months ago. The older I get the more I work out.

With all the joint problems I have now, I don't want to think what 40 is going to feel like...
|
it's not the age, it's the mileage

My opinion on how to stay fit and mobile into your 50s (and maybe beyond, I dunno)
- No contact sports. So many guys burn it up with football, MX, etc for a few years in their twenties and are seriously gimpy for the second half of their life - No running. I may be biased by being forced to run my guts out in high school XC. But I firmly believe our knees were not meant to run for more than the average lifespan of a prehistoric hunter-gatherer, like 25 years. - Keep your weight down. Pretend you're carrying 40 extra pounds. I mean, pick up a 40 lb kettle bell and carry it around EVERYWHERE 24/7. No wonder your back, knees, hips, etc are hurting. - Easy on the booze. You get one liver free. The next one costs $400,000. |
I've broken both wrists, the end off of my left elbow, 4 ribs displacement fractures, tailbone, the heal off of my right foot, the outside of my right ankle off, a tendon ripped a chunk of bone off of my right ankle, 1 head concusion and compressed t-10 to 1/2 of it's height plus blew a pie cut out of it from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock ( I can still walk!) Both inside and exterior tendons in both kness are torn. You can rotate my left foot 240* and right 280* with out much discomfort. Oh and have turned BOTH of my feet black 2x, The worst was foe a month. the bottoms where black, the middle purple and the tops yellow.
All of this prior to age 40. Beer does help mask some of the pain. |
Welcome to the club...

Jeez. What have you been doing? Rodeo much?
|
Start taking testosterone. It's a miracle drug for us old blokes. See your Dr for a trial of testosterone patches. One patch normally lasts a month. Your weight will come down, your energy levels will increase, not to mention your eer...'staying' power will increase. And you will heal quicker.

It gets a lot worse after 50. Actually I found that somewhere around mid-40's I had to start shedding competitive sports. I'd picked basketball back up in my early 40's, but after a few years up pickup games my back and knees said no more. The last team sport left was softball, but after 4 city league seasons in my mid 40's, I finally had to hang up the spikes. My son and fiance would go to games and always held their breath when I'd dive for a ball at shortstop, wondering if I'd be able to get up. Hobbled through one last game at 1st bass then said no more.
I still get on a bicycle (but not enough) and out into the water body boarding (similarly not enough). The only regular activity I've been able to deal with is tai chi over the past 7 years. My knees crunch on every step, and my back is always one twist away from spasm. I'm viewing as tai chi as about the only savior for any hope of mobility into my 60's and 70's. The other thing I do is end up playing live music about 8-12x a month. That keeps me going... |

It is very, very dangerous to mix gigging with besuboru! You might have been crippled for life had a cello been involved! |
Dr's don't listen to me about opiates and how little that they work on me. When I broke my back I told them. 45 minutes latter my hear rate was high an I wasn't.

well in dog years i should be dead:eek:.....so i am happy to be typing this:D still running and cycling everyday...body surfed with my 15 year old yesterday and i am sore...
regards, dead man walking, ben P.S. I also remember when transmissions weighed less!! |
So at age 64 my brother decides to build a log cabin.
We (wife and I) built our log cabin back when i was a mere 39 years old. (20 years ago) These new fangled logs they grow now a days are a lot heavier. |

Vash- find a good Oesteopath. i did my knee about 12 months ago lifting, then really inflamed it on the pushie. It sucks- cant get up, cant get down, cant lift, stairs impossible- knee is serious stuff.
Assuming its nothing requiring the knife....RICE. rest, ice compression, elevation and some specific exercises. Still took a couple of weeks...oesteo is the go. |

I was ok until I hit 57, then it really started to go downhill. The handfulls of crap that I take to make things better or live longer could choke a horse but I suppose it helps.
Take care of yourself better when you are young... your body will thank you later on! |

I guess I'm lucky. I'm turning 70 in about a week, and I'm suffering from no more than stiffness of joints in the morning, and notice I get noticeably more tired after a day of digging, carrying, and climbing up & down. I did a good job of beating myself up with sports & hiking/climbing, etc. in my younger days. So I'm thankful sofar, but you never know what's around the corner. Here's wishing the rest of you (old an soon to be old farts) the best of energy & comfort as your years pass by. Stay active!

Happy for you, Marv SmileWavy

I tried this for a few months...It helped....Check your PSA as there is a cancer risk....I quit abruptly when my count went up...Not worth the risk...... |
I'm gonna talk to my Doc about this. Prostate was my worry but my PSA has been low for a long time. Mostly, what I read and liked, was that it helps mineralize bonz and with my recent fx of L1 I could really use that. I do NOT wanna go there again !. Also trying to lose weight and have already lost 14#. This might get me further down. As I see it, the prostate is the big risk...
