Again, glad you're with us!

The Pelican community never fails to amaze me. Some of us don't always see eye to eye, but when it counts, we're there for each other.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery Shaun!

Get well soon, Shaun.

Wow, Shaun!!! Thanks for sharing what happened. I'm very glad you are still with us and on the road to recovery.

I fell asleep behind the wheel in 1983. A few broken bones ans some stitches, but thankfully nothing worse. I slid under a pickup truck that was stopped in a turning lane, lifted in the air over me as I passed beneath. I feel fortunate not to have been decapitated by a differential.

I have viewed driver fatigue a little differently since then, as I'm sure you will too.

All the best for a speedy recovery!

GREAT to hear from you in person finally. Focus on your recovery and go for the PT as much as they let you - it will make a huge difference on your rate of recovery and healing without long term problems.

Shaun - you have been put here for some very high purpose to have made it through that wreck. Good luck in your recovery.

Baz 08-10-2012 04:40 AM

Yo Shaun....

Thanks for the pic - you know how much we like our pics!

Seriously....whew! I can't even imagine how one would feel to come through a crash like that and know you were spared. Talk about a reality check - that is the definition if ever there was one.

When I was still in high school we lived about 10 miles away and I would always go surfing after class. One night I surfed till dark and was so tired I fell asleep just as I was coming into town where we lived and I plowed into a speed limit sign in the median. No injuries but scared the chit out of me and since then I always pull over when I start nodding.

Also I think you have to say, as has been stated here so many times...those Germans.....they REALLY know how to build a car!

Please know that you have a support system and that includes me and the other Pelicans here so anything you need we're here.

In the meantime rest up and get well buddy.

Best wishes,
Baz & the girls

Shaun, I'm glad to hear you're hanging in there - when you're up for it drop me a line and I'll buy you a beer or whatever beverage of your choice. I'm really glad this story didn't have a worse ending for you!

Fatigue is an insidious opponent when driving distances. I've fought it many times myself but two (now three, including this one) incidents make me VERY reluctant to drive if I'm even a little bit tired. Firstly, you might recall my cross-country trip from CA to New England in 2009. On that trip, my 911 (which was being towed behind the moving truck) was rear-ended by a guy who fell asleep at the wheel on a wide-open, straight, lonely stretch of I-10 east of Tuscon. He was damn lucky to have not been killed. After I wrestled the truck to a stop after the impact and surveyed the damage and saw the guy's pickup truck, I thought for sure this guy was either dead or going to die right in front of me. Thankfully he didn't, but it still made a hell of a mess for both of us and it took a long time to get sorted out - was very expensive for him too.

The second incident involves a friend of my brother's wife who lives down on Cape Cod. Two years ago she was walking home from the store and a guy who was just flat-out fatigued (working two jobs trying to make ends meet) veered off the road and struck her. Dead instantly. It was tragic. Turns out the guy was a really nice, respectable fellow who just got tired and "pushed it" without thinking about it - not the kind of person who was ordinarily irresponsible or whatever. I guess he was devastated about the incident. I don't know what happened ultimately - I think he did end up getting some jail time out of it so now on top of the guilt he's got a mountain of bills and a record. The family was devastated too (obviously).

Just be careful out there and don't push it! I guess that's what I'm trying to say. Fatigue is REAL and can creep up and get you when you don't expect it to. I've had a couple of close calls myself and mercifully didn't get hurt, nor did anyone else but still...

We should all just thank goodness that Shaun was driving a solid car and that someone was watching out for him! It's a lesson to all of us, because I know we ALL do it on occasion. We need to be more aware of this and not think we're supermen all the time!

DonDavis 08-10-2012 05:53 AM

Holy smokes! Very glad you are on the mend. Be well.

Hugh R 08-10-2012 06:22 AM
