Men's road race. Wish Cav had been able to get his medal. The winner is not a popular rider, given his doping history. The rest of team GB sure rode their guts out trying to control the field. Interesting that Froome fell off first, while Wiggins kept pulling until it was hopeless. No idea what the Germans and Australians were thinking, they had sprinters too but didn't help reel in the breakaway.

Men's time trial. Yet to be raced, but lots of uncertainty. Cancellara may be out after his road race crash. Martin is apparently doubtful due to injury. Wiggins may pay for his efforts in the road race. Evans is apparently still ill. Maybe opens it up for Phinney, Sanchez, TeeJay, etc?

Women's 400 IM. The Chinese swimmer was awesome, she came from behind to crush the American favorite who swam a personal best. That was great to watch.

Women's basketball. As far as cute women go, that Croatian team is a class act. As far as basketball goes, doubly so.

Women's beach volleyball. Have they banned bikinis this year? Sacre bleu!

Men's gymnastics. What happened to the Chinese? The highlight reel had mistake after mistake by them, looked like a disaster.

What events have you been watching?

Women's gymnastics right now...they're just amazing. When you watch in slow motion it really illustrates the skill set required.

Go USA!

More women's beach volleyball. There really does appear to be a rule against cleavage :-(

Oh well, there's always women's diving.

They are moving really fast in slow motion! Absolutely incredible.

How is it even possible to spin around a bar, let go, lauch several feet in the air spinning and flipping, then catch the bar and keep spinning? Seriously?

Or run in a straight line, start flipping and spinning >10' in the air, then land on your feet and do another flip?

Anybody see the picture of the girl gymnasts with Phelps? Ther were about half his size!!

Why do we need tennis in the Olympic?

Don't we have enough amateur and pro tennis events now?

When will autocross be added?

I watched on an off for most of the weekend, and didn't see any coverage of anything that wasn't totally PC and wussified.
Lots of "non-offensive and non-aggressive"sports where the guys wore speedos or spandex and such, not that there's anything wrong with that.
They focused too much on the touchy-feely stories of the athletes but played down that whole success thing.
Wouldn't it be so much better if they did away with all those medals and just gave everyone a PARTICIPATION RIBBON?

NBC reluctantly showed a 1 minute clip mentioning Kim Rhode, but you could tell it was very painful for them to show that.
Just in case anyone (everyone) missed her few seconds of fame, here's a recap:
Quote:
Kim Rhode Shatters Olympic Record
From the New York Times:

Under a drizzly gray sky, Kim Rhode on Sunday became the first American athlete to win five medals in an individual event in five consecutive Olympic Games.

Rhode, center, earned a gold medal in women’s skeet on Sunday, setting an Olympic record and tying the world record. Wei Ning of China, left, finished the event in second place, and Danka Bartekova of Slovakia earned the bronze medal in a shootout.
She earned a gold medal in women’s skeet , setting an Olympic record and tying the world record by hitting 99 out of 100 targets. She also became the first woman to win three gold medals in Olympic shooting.
To win the gold, Rhode shot 99 out of 100 targets, tying the world record.
If she had done something as specatacular in a PC wussy sport it would be front page news all over the world and 4 hours of continuous NBC coverage would be dedicated in her honor.
She'd be on the cover of the NYT, sports illustrated, newsweek, and win a nobel prize.
But Nooooooooo.
Checked you-tube, nope. NBC has all clips regarding Ms. Rhode blocked from embedding. Copywrite and all that

BTW how were the boxing matches over the weekend? Musta missed all of those.
Hard to imagine, I can remember a time when boxing was THE major olympic sport with the most coverage, but that was back when men watched sports instead of just women and sissies.

I missed the American basketball team's games too, guess it was too much of an embarrassment for NBC to have the US totally dominate. I'm sure they'll have to show a game or two eventually no matter how much they hate demonstrations of strength and success by the US.
Maybe they'll appologize to the world before the games and just get it over with.

i saw that last shot kim made..#99. looked like she blasted it right out of the gate.

i love shotguns..and i still thought the competition was boring..

i'm not caring why or how they choose what they televise..i imagine just knowing what the public cares about is playing a part. anything more sinister than that..i dont know.

I like the track and field stuff. The clock is the judge. No need to have someone interpret how good the performance is. Only the fastest is the winner. No points for flair or style just speed or distance.

Most of the rest of it, meh. Just filler.

The US Olympic boxing program has steadily deteriorated over the past several Olympics. 1 medal in 2008. 2 in 2004. 4 in 2000.

Boxing in general is a sport in decline in the US. I don't know if it is the rise of MMA, the disorganization of professional boxing's conflicting titles, or simply not enough exciting, telegenic, popular boxers. You can read various theories here. The State Of Boxing In America - AskMen

Anyway, if a sport has declined a lot and the US has low odds of doing well, it is going to get put on a secondary channel. You can watch all the Olympic boxing you want on CNBC. Its just not on the main NBC channel.

Basketball - did you miss the USA vs France game on Sunday? It was on NBCSN. Tuesday USA vs Tunisia, sure to be a riveting competition. Saturday USA vs Lithuania. More exciting "demonstrations of strength and success by the US".

If you want it, it is there to watch, you just have to look up the listing, which should take less time that it took to write your rant.

x2 Some of the events are entertaining but I cant get into something where a judge decides the winner.

I caught some of the US water polo match Sunday, surprised how much I liked it.

I'll add swimming to that list - just the athletes against the clock. Works for me!

WTF NBC?
Kim Rhode ROCKS!!!!! As do all the other athletes that truly sacrifice to participate.

Didn't see the air rifles Flatbutt, thankfully....

I don't mind Bob Costas - I've always thought he did a pretty good job and am glad he is doing most of the announcing.

One thing I always look for is during post-event interviews for the winner to start off saying their opponent was tough and gave them a good match. That's sportsmanship. I realize many of these athletes get caught up in the moment - heck I would too. But sportsmanship really should be a routine for any athlete and/or team in any sport in any venue. Especially on the world stage it's a chance to represent your country in a positive light.
