I'm not including the Pebble. The Moto and Gear 2 have similar capacity batteries (300 mah) but the Moto 360 uses a four-year old 45nm Texas Instruments processors that is a power suck compared the the latest Samsung processors. The Apple Watch uses a custom Apple processor, the "S1". I am hoping that Apple has used its semiconductor design skills and proprietary control of OS and apps to get better battery life than the Gear 2. A week of battery life would be great, 3-5 days would be okay. I would have to think hard about buying a smartwatch that got only 2 days battery life. And I cannot believe Motorola released the Moto 360 at all.

I'm wondering how the Apple watch will do with Wifi. THAT is a power suck.

40 & 38mm bands, will need about a 4mm bezel. So, 30mm Retina display. This should be ~350x350 resolution. The Gear 2 is 320x320. Gearfit is 432x128.

What I haven't liked about the Samsung watches is the "plasticy" nature. I prefer my Sony Smartwatch 2. It is a metal design, 40mm. Screen resolution is lower (240x240), but it has an "always on", non-backlit mode. It also lasts about 3 days.

And the Gear 2, Gearfit and the SW2 are IP65 or IP66 or IP67. You can wear them in the pool! The original Galaxy Gear was not.

jyl 09-09-2014 08:34 PM

I am not sure the Apple Watch has WiFi. It doesn't need it. Just needs a connection to the iPhone, probably Bluetooth Smart.

I don't like the wireless charging. I would have preferred a Magsafe connector just like the MacBook, so that you don't have to carry a second charger and perhaps could charge faster. I assume it was an aesthetic choice.

I hope there will be third party watch faces. I'd like a Heuer "Monaco" face.

Red, does your Gearfit reliably measure your heart rate during hard exercise? I've heard the wrist optical sensors have a hard time with that. Also, does it have to be positioned precisely on your wrist to read HR?

3 days battery life would be barely tolerable. To me.

enzo1 09-09-2014 09:15 PM

it has Wi-Fi 802.11b/g & Bluetooth 4.0...

jyl 09-09-2014 09:25 PM

I hope it only uses the wifi to update software. Like red says, wifi will suck the battery.

The battery on these smart watches is 1/5 the capacity of an iPhone 5 battery. So power consumption is critical.

Apple knows a lot about power saving. They and Samsung are the only smartphone makers who design their own processors. Apple also makes their own OS and most of the apps. So if anyone can get decent battery life from a smart watch, it really should be them.

Any of these watches, Apple included, will use an optical sensor for measuring heart rate. This is what those finger tip things do in the hospital. The HR measurement is pretty good. It will check it periodically (a few times a minute), I'm guessing to save battery life.

As far as 3 days of battery, that is DARN GOOD! Some of the watches last 12 hours! The Sony SW2 lasts 3 days minimum. In low drain mode, 5-7 days. I usually get 3-5 days before my Gearfit will remind me to charge it. It was at 12% this morning when I was reminded, good for another 8 hours if needed.

One thing that the Apple and the Sony SW2 have is NFC, which can be used for payments, etc. The bad thing is that a stolen watch can be used to pay for things!!! Credit cards have your name on them!

I am not knocking the Apple watch. I'm simply putting out there what the competition can do. And what it needs to match or beat.

It will compete. People will pay a Premium for Apple products, even if they are technically inferior. It took a long time for the Apple iPhone to match what my Palm Treo could do, several years before. Apple does stylish better than the competition.

enzo1 09-10-2014 03:18 PM

I read somewhere that the watch has sensors that can tell when you put it on, then it asks for a code number.... which is erased when you take it off

I can't tell you how cool it is to have been involved in the launch of a company that grew to this level.

Fascinating! Can you tell the story about your work with AAPL back in the early days?

Long story. The Steves came to the ad agency I worked at - to plead for us to take their business - and respectively pissed off/mystified the other folks in the room, but I saw something in Jobs that impressed me and I said 'I'll take them.' My team developed the logo, the brand character a brochure and an ad. Jobs wore everyone else out. When I left the agency 7 months later, I freelanced at two startups: Apple and Automotion. I worked directly with Jobs and remained friendly with him for about 20 years until I told him something he didn't want to hear. It may be covered in a new documentary being developed. And I'm co-writing a book about Apple marketing covering the first 30+ years.

Yes, I took the photo along with a few others on May 1977. Several publications have licensed it. Yeah, the rest of the story will come out. It's a big part of the book.

No doubt, and because 8 years later, Microsoft was my client (I did the introduction of Excel), I got to see a company at the other end of the spectrum, technologically and philosophically.

Anyone else getting nervous? I'm thinking of getting out... I've been on a collectable (GP motorcycles) binge lately. Might free up some capital for new acquisitions.

If you want to get out I would dump half and the rest after the first of the year. They are supposed to have a big quarter.

motion 11-06-2014 09:00 AM

I think I'm gonna get out and chase some motorcycles I've had my eye on. I'm a bit nervous about the continuing IOS8 issues and the watch being a dud. Its already being pushed back to spring 2015.

McLovin 11-06-2014 12:50 PM

Hmmmm . . .

motion 11-06-2014 12:53 PM

Maybe get back in if its back in the 80s or low 90s...

biosurfer1 11-06-2014 01:09 PM

Interesting, Apple is only up 17% from when you started this thread, however if you invested 6 months later, its up 94%

island911 11-06-2014 01:12 PM

wasn't there a split?

anyway, now that Cook has launched iGay...

biosurfer1 11-06-2014 02:59 PM

those numbers are split adjusted

island911 11-06-2014 03:12 PM

Wow.

17%

Well, new malware reports and the iCloud hacking of celeb's along with Cook's launch of iGay .... this is not Steve Job's Apple.

Homophobic much?

 don't be so pathetic.

it's a non-sequitur distraction.

I mean, he could come out wearing a conductors hat to tell the world how much of a model train enthusiast he is. Chooo choooo... here comes the tunnel...

Does he think it gives him street cred or something?

motion 11-06-2014 05:29 PM

Deflect much?

island911 11-06-2014 05:32 PM

Project much?

My point was, this is not Steve Job's Apple.

if you can manage to focus on that claim, w/o your programed knee-jerk reaction to a less than gushingly positive comment about his coming out, then fine.
Otherwise, you are simply dangling a red-herring. Deflecting from my main point.

Spectacularly public iCloud hacking
Mac and iPhone virus -not just for jail-broken phones
horrible upgrades
And . . . the CEO babbling about his <strike>hobby</strike> super wonderful gay advocacy.

Again; this is not Steve Job's Apple.

Is Apple the only stock you own?

I'm more of a value investor so I like holding things that appear cheap vs competitors or the market. On several measures Apple is cheaper than many of its peers or even the S&P500. ON a simple P/E basis Apple (16x) is trading below the SP's (18x) multiple, and right about even with the DOW. Apple has the huge advantage though in that it has much better earnings growth than either of the indices. Maybe there are other things in your portfolio that are better sells?

Have you ever traded options at all? There are quite a few opportunities there that could limit your downside risk, give you upside potential, and depending on margin requirements it could free up capital. For example selling puts and buying calls.

Just my thoughts on possibilities for you. I can't predict what Apple will do in the short term or how it will do vs peers or the market as a whole. Although on valuation it does appear cheap, it was a lot cheaper not that long ago. I absolutely can't make any prediction on how it will perform vs a portfolio of motorcycles:) Bikes are a lot more fun to look at and tinker with!

No, its just that I have a horrible record with equities in the 20 years I've been messing with them. Its a no-brainer for me to take my 35% profit in AAPL and put it into pretty bikes I can look at and tinker with, and know that they are guaranteed to not go down in value :)

If you sell your shares of apple someone migh call you a homophobe, so you better hang onto them even if the shares go down on you
