I really like the sound of the first series. Very interesting stuff.

Mike - a couple of tidbits...

the first tidal buoy power system was just approved for the Or. coast - the EIS (or was it an EA) will discuss risks to fishing -- interesting as the state is just in the process of designating marine reserves to protect core areas for fisheries resources

for hydro, there are the impacts on anadromous fish as well as other fish - dam removal is a hot topic in the PNW right now; enviro groups were dismayed to hear from a govt. convened group of scientists that dam removal was not a panacea to restore fish - sorry, I don't have alink but the report issued in the last few years

the AOU (Amer. Ornithologists Union) will have the best info on impacts to birds from wind power - and how to avoid

I hope you'll also include some analysis of distributed power generation and the + effects re transmission losses, and risk to the grid

- will you discuss subsidies in the volume? if so, don't forget the Price-Anderson Act liability cap for nukes that Jim Sims noted just a month or so ago

oh.. and don't forget the "environmental nighmare" of recycling the batteries in EVs!

Electrolysis is certainly a factor. The Annapolis unit uses 17-4-2 stainless alloy and is expected to have a life of 80 years. The blade to hub joins were not adequately radiused, so had to have increased radius curves machined in place to remove stress risers about 15 years in.

It's a neat peice of kit, but a "dead end" as far as the highly sedimented conditions in the Bay of Fundy are concerned.

Next generation are in-stream generators, which do not use dams. That is probably what your fellow traveller was into.

Best

He was working on a project on the caostline - I thought in the Northeast. As I recall it used some form of paddles and not tubines...

The enviro concerns plague each technology. The financial analysis and gov tax breaks along with policy are major chapters in each volume.
