Is this a brown recluse?

Brown recluse or not? I didn't get a good photo of the back... based on this, what do you think?

Hate to say this but little brown spider that is not hairy (not possibly a baby tarantula) and it is dead. I do not ask questions I just treat it like a known black widow or a mouse or rat or squirrel or something!

Looks like a good candidate. The thorax / abdomine are very close - notice the leg position attachment as well as the coloring. I would say with 85% certainty that yes, it is...

All Brown Recluse...

the important part that has very clear in Lubey's first pick odds the outline of the violin on its back. If you don't see it, the violin is upside down with the neck pointing at the spiders abdomen. There are lots of harmless spiders that look a lot like a recluse at a glance.

Might be a related spider called the "desert recluse". The poison is not supposed to be as bad...

Yeah, just read about that. Sounds like brown recluse spiders don't live in AZ, but the desert recluse does. Violin shape is not prominent. Venom, though slightly less potent, has same results as the brown recluse.

I had one of these in my garage a couple of years ago. It had a BIG egg sack. It would come down off the web and run after me if I got too close!

In general, I leave spiders alone, as they take out other bugs (flys, mosquitos). But poisonous spiders are killed! I haven't found any around here. Mostly wolf spiders here. Next time I save one from the pool, I'll check for the violin...

Could be a hobo spider, recluse relative. Venom not being as bad as a recluse just means you get a dead spot the size of your thumb, rather than the size of your hand.

James, recluse bite looks very similar to a copperhead bite. Trust and believe you never want to get bitten by either one.

kill that bastid! KILL KILL KILL! DIE DIE DIE!

get some DE(diatomacious(sp) earth(pool store) and spread it ALL AROUND PERIMETER of HOUSE..................everywhere in garage. about a 2-3" wide swath next to floorboard, will kill everything that breathes thru lungs. tiny microscopic diatoms look like razor blades under microscope. kills krickets(crickets) which cause bad breath and scorpions.

remember the big bugs gotta eat lil bugs. if NO lil bugs............NO BIG BUGS!

samo with rattlesnakes...............kill all the pesky vermin with traps/poison/have no heart traps............and theres no longer any poo poo pee pee from them (vermin-rodentin)for rattlesnakes to be sniffing for food.

Can't begin to research these things without coming across photos of the necrosis caused by their bites. Note to self... do not research spiders right after lunch.

Our back yard is so full of crickets and cockroaches that I'd prefer to leave it be. I just need to be confident this critter isn't going to crank out litters of 100 babies that could ultimately harm my family.

Lee -- based on the size of the abdomen, it is a female. There are at least 2 breeding seasons every year, so yes it will have many dozens if not hundreds of babies every year. The males roam great distances (as much as 200 yards every day), and the females tend to look for nesting sites. The juveniles and adult males are aggressive and will bite with little or *no* provocation, and inject lots of toxin, which means the wound will be bad. Please kill it, if not for yourself then for the sake of your family and pets.

Prior to the Raid bath... isn't that a baby I see in the pic? Hmmm... looks like I should have turned on the red-eye reduction, too.

I filled the hole with Raid until it was running down the wall.
