Romain Dumas At pike's peak: the whole climb
Romain Dumas Pikes Peak 2012 : Challenging The Clouds - YouTube
Considering he lost by 17 thousands of a second, you gotta wonder if he might not have clinched it with one or 2 less cameras creating drag on his car ;-) Pretty cool though ! |

Nice video, thanks for posting.
I also noticed he missed the apex by almost an inch in some places. He may have won if he knew how to drive better. ![]()

So how do you convert a floor 6 speed to a paddle shifter?

The RSRs use paddle shifters in the ALMS, as do the BMWs and Ferraris. It is a new regulation for this year that they are allowed paddle shifters. Mainly it just helps save wear on the transmission compared to the still very fast floor shifting sequential. I am not sure about other sanctioning bodies but Pikes Peak has very few technical rules so I imagine they just took a GT3R and put the RSR paddle shifters on.

^Probably right.
There is an electro-hydraulic component to the paddles that needs to be added. The sequential floor-shifter needs a deliberate tug or push when shifting because it's actually connected mechanically with the gear selector fork inside the transmission, whereas the paddles obviously send an electronic signal to some sort of brain that then activates a hydraulic ram or rams that do the actual shifting. Here's a cool DIY on Rennlist of someone installing the auto-throttle-blip to the sequential shifter. You can see the shift rod that comes from the tranny and hooks up to the base of the shifter. I was disappointed it was only in-car / off the car footage. Someone needs to put some cameras on the side of the road or better have air footage!
