How about taking of for a month. Rent on an apartment is not more than for two weeks. Chose the most exiting place and stay there, relax let the local ambiance seep in and explore without haste. I have done those vacations many times and they were the best.

Sicily.
With Andalusia a very, very close second. We have been to both & my wife would disagree about Sicily. She hated the driving - which I loved. That said, we are going to Morocco next spring. Ian

I've been REALLY jonesing to spend some time in and around San Sebastian in Basque country. Also really interested in checking out Croatia and Slovenia.
Next year we are hitting up Italy again and will be in the Veneto. I'm trying to convince the missus to start off our trip with the Italian GP in Monza since we'll be there in early September.

I don't understand. Can't just about anyone take 2 weeks off? Now, to go anywhere has a lot to do with cost. If someone told me, "Take off, hoser and we'll take care of everything for 2 weeks including the bills" (but not the traveling expense), I'd be happy in a lot of places less than a 100 miles from here.
If the vacation bill is footed, that's a different story. I wouldn't even know where to start. Maybe a trip across Canada. Or the US. I'd use some train time in a private car. Could do it in a Prevost motorhome too, with a driver. Yeah, that sounds awesome. |

Turkey is exotic and entertaining.
Reasonably inexpensive, after plane fare. |

When you pull up to one of the faculties for gas they actually help you with the boat. Loved sitting on the bow of the boat with someone else driving. Watching the rocks and formations go by is really head clearing. GO DO IT |

To those that mentioned the JMT, you can do it in sections a weekend at a time. Can't say that about many things. I'm sure you could go to Lake P for the weekend and I bet a lot do. AFA tracking miles, I could jump on Route 66 and do a bunch of it in a weekend. Flying one way would extend the amount covered. I wonder if the Greyhound travels the 66.

About 10 years ago I took 3 months off and went island hopping down the Carribean chain. Hit 22 different islands. Lived out of a backpack and stayed, ate, visited only locals places. No resorts or chains. Had a ball...really wasn't that expensive. Split expenses with a then gf it cost about $6K each total including our flight to USVI and from Caracas VZ.
Had a ball. Made me realize I'd go crazy living on an island. Took me 2 months to get my body odor from smelling like jerk chicken. lol

go diving at lake powell! diving there is wayyy cool. as long as there is no spring runoff. otherwise main channal is turbid with silt. park service actually has maps of indian cliff dwellings you can dive on. stripper fishing is insane when ya see top water minnow action. a housboat is nice, just dont plan on going fast and in a storm........they just flat plain SUCK! powell is NO DIFFERENT than the great lakes or the ocean(cue in edmund fitzgerald gordon lightfoot song), it gets BAD and it gets UGLY! seen 70ft houseboats sunk there from 4 day 24hr storms back in 1990 july. any deep vee hull boat is the ticket for safety in a storm. park service uses big azz'd boston whaler with 3 300hp johnsons on the back for search and rescue patrols. now a houseboat towing a coupla jet ski's and(i said AND) a 16ft boat is the hot ticket for exploring small canyons. my suggestion is go with somone who knows WTF is going on. the place is HUGE! #1 cause of death there is falling off cliffs. navajo sandstone. #2 cause of death is BLOOD LOSS due to whatever stoppid stunt somebody has pulled, as help is many many MANY MILES AWAY, and radios nor sat phones work for poo in slot canyons 3-500ft up on both sides. the last mapped area of the lower 48 states. you could call yerself a "rurales" =rural...........like nothing/NO-ONE AROUND! SOLITUDE! the book to get is "stan jones lake powell" explains everything mile by mile from wahweap all the way to hite utah. wifey and i yesterday went and looked at some used 30-33ft cabin cruiser boats (can trailer)for sale for this exact reason............lake powell. deep vee hull ,twin big blocks, duoprops for skiing, fuel economy, air conditioning and heat microwave refrig icemaker. the whole enchilada. lake powell is a GEM!

I thought I had read that Lake P was so low that a lot of the upper regions and side canyons were un-navigable. Might be able to walk on the Indian ruins.

well when ya see that yer running out of water............ya STOP or go aground!
lake powell is so damn big it really hurts the eyes. i mean MASSIVE! where else can ya go to the middle of the lake and dump yer canteen cup in and drink it without getting sick! how do i describe how vast it is??? here, if ya got dumped into middle of the lake, becuase yer crew mutinied, you aint swimming to the other side............yer a dead man swimming. i have personally seen 4-6 ft waves there. its nothing to trifle with, and ya better be a damn good skipper or suffer greatly. it DOES NOT SUFFER FOOLS! playing around the "deep end" at wahweap is one thing for day cruises/weekend trips. once ya get into main channal you have (5) FIVE MAJOR RIVERS FEEDING IT from rocky mtn snowpak runoff. i was in the coast guard and it paid off in spades there. ya better KNOW THE BUOY SYSTEM , and running at night unless in main channal at low water levels is risky. they cant run buoys everywhere...............ITS TOO BIG and NOT ENUFF MANPOWER! when you stop the boat in the middle of lake and hear NOTHING..........YOU will know YOU HAVE ARRIVED! october IS one of the best times to go. ![]()
