F1 to NBC in 2013
NBC and NBC Sports announce 4 year deal beginning in 2013, to broadcast all F1 races including all practices and qualifying. This will include live streaming on nbcsports.com.
I hope they hire Hobbs and Matchett from the soon to be defunct Speed. Tim |

Hot friggin dog! I had to cut costs and downsize my Satellite programing to the point of loosing Speed... F1 was the only thing I miss.
Wife is going to be pissed "you are going to watch racing for three hours?"

All practices? P1, P2 and P3? That's a lot of airtime. I suspect this will be on the old Versus, with the race on NBC.
Varsha and Matchett are great, but David "there's no doubt about it" Hobbs is the weak link. Matchett provides excellent technical information, I'd like to see the driving commentary at the same level. Talk about why they take the line they do (sometimes it's not obvious), adjusting braking points based on conditions, site lines, visibility (have you noticed their eye level is just barely above the nose? Check it out next time you see a side view of a driver), race pace versus qualifying pace, all the things that go through a drivers head.

Totally agree and leave Varsha and Posey for some other network.

That will be great as I can dump SPEED, since it sucks now anyway.

Love it if they could pick up Peter Windsor and drop Buxton.

Let's hope not. Memories of CART and how many major networks broadcast them - would cut the race off in the final laps! Happened OFTEN as they would switch to some fricken golf round or whatever. Footnote on Bob Varsha: Was at a race venue with friends and all of us just had paddock passes. At the end, walked pass the security onto the grid for the celee party. So here's Varsha behind us getting held up by the security AND he's P.O. telling them...'look at all these guy's going'.... I'm so and so, blah, blah.... One guy turned back at him, gesturing and telling the security to arrest him - LOL!

I do not mind Buxton but sure really miss Peter Windsor. Was wondering what he was up to lately and hope he returns.

The webcast is usually quite good, especially when he has Craig Scarborough (scarbsF1 blog) on for race debriefs. He had Mario on earlier this year for a long interview, which was fanastic. Tim Last edited by tchanson; 10-16-2012 at 09:05 AM.. |

I like Varsha and Matchette, but for me Hobbs is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Windsor used to get upset when owners etc. of teams would give him non-answers, yet when he became a part owner he perpetuated the same nonsense. IMO, Varsha, Matchette and Buxton with a little Posey. I do think NBC will screw the pooch.

I'm tired of the Sam Posey essays.
Hobbs is 73 years old!!! Can they find someone that can relate to the cars and current drivers please?

Too bad they couldn't poach Jake Humphries, DC and Eddie Jordan...the BBC crew. They are a FANTASTIC team; the BBC puts together some AWESOME pkg's (3-5min pre produced gems). They also seem to get better driver and pricipal access than Speed. Their pre-race from Monaco is top shelf (usually from some bad azz yacht in the harbor).

Man, I guess I'm the odd man out here, (story of my life) I can't stand Matchett, everyone else is fine, I even have a certain regard for Sam Poseys florid essays.
Yay! I can dump Speed channel.

Matchett is speaking to our PCA group this weekend - I will try to find out as much as I can.

"The deal that begins next season will air four races on NBC. The remaining 16 races, and all practices and qualifying sessions will be on cable NBC Sports Network in what's expected to total more than 100 hours of annual programming."
So most of it will be on NBCSN aka Universal Sports. I want them to keep Matchett for sure. The other thing I'd like is for the commentators to actually be at the track for some races. |
