Guy jumping from space -- live feed

Felix Baumgartner is making the jump in a space suit, helmet and parachute. He's being ballooned 23 miles up, where he'll begin the jump.

Baumgartner, who is being sponsored by Red Bull, could be the first human being to break the sound barrier without the assistance of a mechanical device like an airplane or spacecraft. Because the air is so thin at that altitude, 40 seconds into the jump he should hit 690 miles an hour.

To give you some perspective, he'll jump from a height more than 3 times the cruising altitude of a commercial jet.

It was done in 1959 - 1960

Whatever. This is a few miles higher and the cameras on the suit will be cool to follow.

TheMentat 10-09-2012 10:42 AM

booo... mission aborted.

gassy 10-09-2012 10:43 AM

Just aborted for today. Too windy.

widgeon13 10-09-2012 11:25 AM

Did they say when it was to be rescheduled?

motion 10-09-2012 11:39 AM

Bummer.... I've been following this closely for years. Cannot wait to see the videos of the jump, when it happens. Forecast is not looking good for a few days. They really need sub-3MPH winds, which is tough. The balloon is something like 3 times as large as any balloon ever used to loft people. Watching the live feed, it really looks difficult to manage. I wish them good luck. Good thing they have Red Bull's big money behind them :)

That promo video had me in a cold sweat! I am so envious of this guy.

chocolatelab 10-09-2012 01:32 PM

Thats so bada**

Where does that guy find room in his spacesuit for his balls.

motion 10-09-2012 01:50 PM

I wonder how much time he has allotted to leave the capsule and stand there, taking in the view. Geez, as much fun as the jump would be, it would be hard to tear your eyes off of that.

ODDJOB UNO 10-09-2012 01:59 PM

will i get to see the vapor re-enter trail from here in airy-zoney?

:D

Maybe... but it's for sure Mr. Snuggles will probably be able to hear it and smell it.

I tell you what... if your name is FELIX, you have to do something like this to get a man-card.

Yeah. In the promo the guy says "Ok Felix, jump whenever you're ready..." two hours later he'll be saying "Um ok Felix, whenever you're ready..."

Heel n Toe 10-09-2012 02:06 PM

Oh, well.

Launch Aborted
Today, the launch of the Red Bull Stratos capsule had to be stopped at 11:42 a.m. local time in Roswell, New Mexico just before Felix Baumgartner's giant 30 million cubic foot balloon had been fully inflated and made ready for take off. From early morning the team postponed the launch due to strong winds at 700 feet - the balloon's top - waiting for the right weather window to open. The launch was scheduled for 11:40 a.m., the balloon inflation had begun, and then gusty winds picked up and made a launch impossible.

ODDJOB UNO 10-09-2012 03:27 PM

his ballz are going to need a very BIG life support system.

we can see any miss-kill shots across new mexico as a contrail from WSMR!

ree-entry ought to bee damn good!

BlueSkyJaunte 10-09-2012 04:17 PM

At least his suit is aerodynamic.

The last thing you want when freefalling is an aerodynamic suit :)

All that parasitic drag is better? Especially when trying to hit Mach 1?

motion 10-09-2012 04:51 PM

If I ever hit Mach 1 in free fall, I want to be stable. Spinning uncontrollably at that speed might not be good.

Buckterrier 10-09-2012 06:40 PM

I heard this Thursday he could try again weather permitting.

M.D. Holloway 10-09-2012 08:03 PM

Things are gonna get plenty hot. Should have slathered him up with some silicone oil...

The slacker!

mikeesik 10-09-2012 08:53 PM

I have a very good book on this. It is in storage.
Kittinger suffered decompression ..in his hand..along with torturous old tech.

motion 10-09-2012 08:58 PM

I cannot even imagine what it would feel like to be standing at the edge of the atmosphere, looking down at 7 billion people, for several seconds, knowing you were THE ONE to be doing such a thing. That is really amazing!

enzo1 10-10-2012 09:42 PM

After two delays in two days due to weather and winds, Red Bull has tentatively set the next launch for it's 23 mile record breaking supersonic space jump for Sunday morning.
