motorcycle V corvette on the dragon

Pic 8 and onward. Things go bad quickly

Xtreme Sports Photography at PhotoReflect.com - The Dragon Oct. 16th, 2012 Tuesday

I rode the dragon many years ago.. meh
Having one of my young racetrack buddies die there a few years ago, I have little desire to ever go back.

At first I was going to say he took his eyes off the road too long (and his hand off the bar), but it appeared he had control and had entered the turn alright (leaned over well) so WTF happened? Why did he run wide?

I don't ride, so I don't know what term to use for this, but in photo 10 it looks like he leaned so far over that the right side of the frame or the exhaust on that side hit/caught the pavement and that's what caused him to lose control, and you can see him begin to go wide in photo 11.

Panicked, stared himself right into the fender?

This. Went exactly where his eyes took him...also could have salvaged some style points by sticking the landing...fail.

Instinctive reaction was probably to brake - and hence he stood the bike up in order to brake hard. Probably the wrong thing to do (evidently!) as he may have made it if he kept turning given it looked like the Corvette was prepared to give him room even though he crossed the centre line. Easy to be wise after the event.

Basically caused by going too fast IMHO. I can't imagine that Harleys turn very well at any decent speed so you need to get your corner entry speed right as you can't lean them over very far before grounding.

BTW, I only ride 125cc twist & go, so this really is only my $0.02.

First, that's not a Harley. But that bike is no more qualified for aggressive cornering. More important, neither is the rider. I ride those mountains frequently, although I judiciously avoid the "dragon" because of traffic, etc. Until you gain a bit of experience and respect for switch-backs and insanely tight transitions, it can easily take you by surprise, as was the case here.

I really feel bad for the poor guy in the Vette. He had it fully under control and was enjoying his day when this 800 lb steel projectile decided to take him out.

Yikes! Absolutely painful to flip through that photo sequence. I've ridden the dragon a few times, but never aboard a sled like that cruiser bike. He clearly ran out of lean angle. Those corners are very tight, often blind, sometimes decreasing radius.

I was looking carefully for signs of heavy braking by the motorcycle, but it didn't look to me like the rear wheel ever locked up.

The correct vernacular is RUB

There was a great photo sequence a few years ago of some a RUB waving to the camera and subsequently laying down the bike, but I can't find it right now.

I drove the Dragon on a Thursday morning at 8:00 AM. Not much traffic except a few motorcycles.

It was a short curvy road. I have the sticker and a t-shirt.

There are many roads in Arkansas that are 100 times better. That motorcycle driver needs to quit riding.

He got scared and hit his front brake, and it stood him straight up.

I've been on that road 5-6 times, and have never truly enjoyed it, and this doesn't help me feel better.

What happened to him is simple physics, mixed with bad timing.

He entered the turn too fast. The laws of physics made it impossible for him to stay on his side of the road, given his speed and the sharpness of the curve.

He would have just run over the double yellow and still made the turn if not for the bad timing of the Corvette also occupying that space in that instant.

It was the guy taking the pictures fault........the first 8 pics the rider is waving for the camera. That breaks his concentration and he then looses control.

That bike has A LOT of weight up high with that red duffel above the tail storage. Even a few pounds that high can make a big difference. And, he was certainly going too fast for the corner, being distracted by the photographer.

The combination of speed and the high weight took the bike over further than he expected. He dragged the header circa frame 10 and just gave up on the curve.

You can't see it but, about frame 16, when he let off the brakes, he shat himsef.
