Gumbo. Squirrel is excellent - one of my favorite.

And yes, animals die every day. Often they are eaten. Sometimes by humans. We are animals too and happen to be on top of the food chain.

I trapped and shot 21 ground squirrels this year. AND trapped and relocated the four red's in the spring. My neighbors gardens, as well as mine are fantastic.

FYI:

All the campsites we visited had warnings against touching squirrels.
Potential carriers of plague.

I respect your kindheartedness Mark, but every Northwestern boys use squirrels for target practice. They're as rare as houseflies or earthworms.

We had a pine squirrel get into our attic last fall. I could hear him up there running around & doing what these varmits do best. I spent a few weeks trying to figure out how in the he.. that varmit was getting into the house. Finally one day an opportunity came up for the varmit to have a discussion with Mr. 410. No more discussions.

1). No you didn't. Of course that doesn't surprise anyone. I asked what diseases they carry.

2). Ashamed to say the same one as you

3). Yes they do, and obviously you still live there.

4). Thank you for answering the question I DID ask. And again I'll go out on a limb here and say the recent meningitis outbreak has killed more people in the last 20 years than your hantavirus, (it's one word), has. And btw oddduck, rabbits, mice, & cats do also. Going to off all them also?

Have a great weekend. I'm off to get ready for Sandy.

The problem in our area is chipmunks. I tried to start my leaf vacuum Thursday and discovered they had packed in area under the cooling shroud with hickory nuts. They also invade my cars and chewed through the wiring in my van. The best defense I have against them is a cat. Though he tries to play the cut little kitty role his job is to be a vicious carnivore, patrolling the perimeter, searching and destroying rodents and snakes.

well then dont forget to get lil ORANGE PFD's(personal flotation devices) for all of yer squirrels and chipmunk/rat friends.................i think your all gonna need it.

and the reason i spillt "hanta virus" as i did, was because i was afeared that word, would be too BIG of a word, for you to wrap yer FAT head around.

i can understand everything you have said..i get it, you love animals. i will never think less of you, or differently of you, but loving animals. i again..I get it.

but your statement above is EFFED up. sure, some people..yup, they probably have NO regard for any living creature's life.

but to toss up a lame blanket statements to lump all hunters together as some sort of thoughtless killer is BS. complete and utter BS uttered by someone that is unclear on the concept of who and what we are. i think Freud said it. people are uncomfortable with killing animals because that makes them realize we are simply animals on the planet..animals that eat other animals. i hunt. i love the challenge. i'm not a great hunter, not even a good hunter. but i am getting better. my physical abilities are improving as well.

when i take an animal, it is serious business. it may be the only time i whisper a prayer when i let that arrow go. when the animal is down..i will pray..a prayer of thanks. i wont waste the meat. i will carry that stuff out on my back. every get blood out of the inside of a backpack? i will eat it, share it with friends and family..and honor that beast with the best gravy i can manage. the meat is low fat, nutritious..very low cholesterol..hormone and drug free. and you know what? that animal was living it life as it knows best..free. up until the end, i imagine that animal was happy..maybe not the time it was escaping wild predators..but it was living life.

polar opposite to the cows and pigs penned up across the country.. you think that is happiness for the animals? people buy body parts off of these penned up animals, hiring "hitmen" to kill them, break them down, and put them in tiny Styrofoam packages further insulating the consumer from the fact that they just participated in the HUGE machine that produces meat for this planet.

i think i have huge regard to animal life. i accept the responsibility to do some of the wet work to put food on my table. i have fun hunting..yes..i dont relish the killing. i just choose to step in and do some of the hard work..make the hard decisions, accept the responsibility to take a life.

buck-t. i get your ideas and beliefs..i think you should get ours.

No argument. Overpopulation is a problem for humans.

When a squirrel is crossing a street I will slow down or try NOT to run over it if.

I will NOT hit the brakes hard or swerve to avoid ANY animal with the exception of a human. I love animals and I don't go out to kill unless they invadee my property. I understand that they don't know my property limits. I do not even thing twice about killing mice. I have never see a rat around here but it would die if I did.

I have a squirrel living in the tree behind my house. It is a Bradford Pear tree and has mega thousands of the little tiny pears that are useless. The squirrel eats bunches of them but does not make a real dent in the supply. As long as Mr Squirrel stays in the tree and does not try to invade my house he will live.

my neighborhood squirrels and i..we both love apricots. i have a fantastic apricot tree! apparently they have more time than me. i have yet to eat a single apricot!! i will watch one particularly huge, unblemished fruit..yum! i will watch it and watch it as it transitions from pale green to the warm glow of the sun. yellow fades to a deep orange. one more day..let it tree ripen. i go for it, only to find it is GONE! the genius squirrels are watching the fruit too!!

the tree placement makes it impossible for me to get off shots safely. i know now..it is for the squirrels. i gave up. whatever. they mess with my persimmons and it is GAME ON!

Webby,

You, just friggin' slay me sometimes!! I am laughing my ass off on the above post. You may irritate the living crap out of me from time to time but there are times that you are so spot on!!!! AND you, as others on this board, have such a "unique" way of expressing the point!

Thanks for sharing!
