Dogs!
Big dogs, kept inside the home, and an alarm system. You don't want them " uh the bad guys", coming in the home to begin with. What keeps them out is better than reacting once they are in.
Yes, they could risk one dog maybe, but a few going crazy loud ... not likely. Move on to easier jobs... Once in, where is the guarantee you'll get the drop? If you're a mite slow on the uptake.... all the guns won't do a bit of good... And, the dogs can aide you in being ready with your gun if necessary. Quote:

A gun you take to the range once every month or two, clean, lock it up, and forget about it for days/weeks. Big difference in maintenance. I would love to have a dog someday but living in an upstairs unit just doesn't seem practical.

Dunkin Donuts
Quote:
Yep, hear ya. I walk dogs twice a day, this in addy to them running around backyard. Feel like that Dunkin guy quite a bit. But, the dogs are rewarding and the walking is good for me so.... Have an Irish Wolfhound and a Basenji - Pit mix. I did have two wolfies for a while. Would scare the crap outta solicitors...they never knew they had the ability to jump that far without even thinking about it. LOL I guess I am skeptical about the efficacy of guns. I have a concealed carry permit and a sig, and thinking of second one and a mossberg. However, coming from a military background (LRS infantry) I also know the value of dedicated training, and then more training. Familiarity with your weapon, so that it is almost part of you is needed for when times get hot. Without that, adrenaline, fear etc... takes over and makes limited skills ineffective. I think that producing/or trying to produce a weapon can escalate things fast.... if the requisite skills are not there you are asking for trouble. Not sure if shooting at a well lite range a few times a year gets one there...? |

Dogs are great but my wife is allergic, even to the so called hypoallergenic ones. Interviews with convicted burglars normally list dogs as the #1 reason why they pass up a house.

Snakes. Big snakes.
Seriously, my 1st defese is living in an area where I never have to lock my house. Not during the day or even at night. I don't even lock it when I leave. 2nd line of defense is my dog Fluke who may lick an intruder to death. Third are neighbors either retired or unemployed. Fourthmis a Rem 870 and Glock 21 in 9 mm.

Your dog? Why that is uncalled for!!!
Even a small dog with a big bark will scare away robbers... And even if you keep your gun loaded and at bedside (I don't, I know some of you do, I pray you don't have children) it is a dangerous proposition. I do not have children so I am thinking of a cleaver way to mount my 870 out of sight in the bedroom closet. However I also feel a shotgun is unwieldy inside a house and would prefer my handgun in close quarters.

My Golden Retriever (Daisy) will hold the intruder at bay by licking tham and insisting that she be petted, while I get the firearms ready...

i am convinced a small dog is a better watchdog than a large dog.
ever met a chihuahua? my culdesac is "covered" by a single mini schnauzer. that dog barks anytime a stranger steps onto our circle. day or night. i hear Jess bark and i will flip a light on and take a peek. she is a good dog.

Gon fix it with me hammer

The ultimate combination , off course, is to dig 2 moats.
You gotta dig em at least 20 ft wide, 20 ft apart and at least 10 feet deep. Then you fill em both with water In the outer moat you put Giant Crocs In between you put a couple of underfed, yet not starving lions (!!! not tigers, those bastards will swim and either escape, or come to your house !!) And in the inner moat you put a couple of sharks.. (with friggin' laser beams if you really want the full package) |

Duh.. that's cause you filled the moat to the edge ..
That's why i said dig it at least 10 feet deep, so you can leave 2 feet clearance, so the Crocks can't get out.. besides.. you sure your Lions were proper Lions? normally they beat crocs, not the other way around. Bullsharks, correct, it speaks for itself |
