Angry Sad day in the barnyard

I got home today and my favourite rooster was no where around. He usually shows up quickly to beat me up and ask for food. No bird! I looked and called (he answers to his name) and nothing. No rooster! I looked all over the pastures and yard.

I shot a large coyote this am in the back pasture near the house but the barns were all closed up. We have been seeing the signs of a raccoon but have not seen it anywhere.

This evening I found the carnage in the chicken barn. The feathers of one or our roosting mother birds were all over the place. No body. Further in back, my rooster was laying dead protecting the babies! They were all dead and right there with him. I put down the mouse who was in there with my .22.

He was a great bird, I will miss him! He and his full brother took on a red tail a few years back. His brother did not make it through that one. His other cohort died taking on another red tail, my wife saw the bird come in and the rooster rushed between the hens and the hawk to take on the hawk. He lost but the hens survived.

Leisure Suit Larry (Mille Fleur d'Uccle, a rare breed of chicken) was a GREAT rooster! He will be buried in the morning with full honours.

He will be missed. I am now down to one rooster who will throw his life in the way of harm and one rooster who is a rescue from a rooster fighting ring (the poor guy is scared of EVERYTHING).

Sorry to hear about your rooster. What I have found is good ones are hard to come by, ones that will protect the hens but don't turn on little kids for no reason or full size adults.

We have only had 1 rooster which was worth a darn. One day we found it was killed by a younger, seemingly very timid rooster that was always shy up until it struck.

RIP

its late so excuse me.............let me get this story straight. A MOUSE that YOU SHOT with a .22 killed yer hen, the babies, AND the rooster????????

wow you have some BAD AZZ MEEZEZ(MICE) where you live! sheesh was his name "MIGHTY MOUSE?" WAS THE MOUSE ON CRACK? METH? WAS THE MEEZEZ NAME TONY MONTANA MOUSE?

i know when people are high on the aforementioned drugs they can do some pretty weird sheet, but a MOUSE?

i am sorry for yer loss. but i think if the mezzez around yer parts are creating that kind of mayhem i would get a BIGGER GUN /BIGGER CHUCK NORRIS ROOSTERS or CONSIDER MOVING!

in this state if a human or a mouse committed that crime and was convicted, it would be a mandatory death by lethal injection or "ol sparky".

DO AZ..........DO TIME!

Sorry to hear David. Rooster are amazing animals, (and mean as hell). My avitar is Elvis the Silver Campine I had. He also survived a redtail attack. Lost sight in his right eye over it and almost lost his life. But I was able to nurse him back to health. He eventually attack Maxx which lead to his demise.
I hope this short vid puts a smile on your face.

Really sorry to hear this.

We recently lost two (our last two) roosters. Both died protecting their girls, both were wonderful birds, gentlemen, even. When our black silkie rooster would find a worm or large bug he would call one of the girls over to enjoy it, never eating 'treats' himself.

The black silkie was the one we lost most recently. A large coopers hawk had attacked the girls but failed to kill any, we have some large birds. Alfredo (the black silkie) was half the size of some of the hens and though vicious he didn't stand much chance against the hawk. The following day I was doing some general cleanup in the coop and I found a clutch of eggs behind the feed buckets, a very hidden and private spot. We had never hatched eggs before but curiosity and the chance to build our flock up with genes from a good bird provoked me to try. We now have 7 beautiful little birds and at least one is a rooster!

Elvis would do the same thing with worms, calling the girls over for the treat.
Congrats on the little ones!

Interesting hearing of the stories of your heroic family roosters there.

We have more than we need here in Kauai, they are running around all over the place ( were kind of famous for our wild chickens).
Just bring a traveling cage with you, and we can have you stocked up in no time.

Cheers Richard

PS I love the names Leisure Suit Larry, et all :-)
