Weekender putzing around, fine.
105's are not low end. 105 road bikes from Specialized and Trek start at $2,500. Something like Shimano Sora would be more of an entry level groupo.

Whatever...I wouldn't ride it. Had it back in the day and it wore out.

New 105's will be better than "back in the day" Dura Ace, etc...

Ok, so this will be frustrating. Even the 1100.00 Trek 7.5 has Sora front and Deore rear derailleurs. How can there be such a mis-match of components on bike of this price?

Guess I'll just have to start shopping.

Buy a frame, select the components yourself and build it.....not rocket science. I've done many over the years. Get a Minoura style bike stand.....I still have the one I bought in 1978.

As a matter of fact, my first high end road bike that I built is still on the road. I get tons of compliments on it.

If you ever find yourself with some new 105 components that you're going to throw away, I'll pay to have them shipped to me. Them's good parts; well engineered, nicely finished and good value, money wise...

Well, I don't ever plan on wearing an Amgen jersey, or probably even clip in pedals. So that may be overkill for a poseur. But I'll consider all options. It seems that every LBS carries the "best" brand. I'll have to find something that fits and I can afford, and research from there.

Cyclocross bikes are a great all-around bike if you are looking for a move-up. They are pretty quick on the road - especially if you put on road specific tires, and surprisingly capable on trails. Definately not "big hit/drop-off" type bikes but I grab mine for alot of trail riding. In fact, my 'cross bike is my "go-to" bike for most rides.

Speedplay pedals are a must if you have bad knees. I don't wear bike logo clothing either.

How about rabbit ears? I know there's a pic around here somewhere :--) Maybe it was a track day with Dan and Ingo (where are those guys).

I'll hit the shops and I am sure I'll be back!

I once got black flagged at Willow Springs.....I had bunny ears taped to my helmet and the top down.

They weren't amused....

My friend has a Kona Jake The Snake. Light, 105/Ultegra, quick on the road and on fire trails, really nice bike. If you want a modern machine.

My bike shop tried to get me to test ride some $10k mountain bike. He said they offer financing. I must have looked like an easy target. My bike can't be worth more than my wife's car.

^I always shake my head at this type of stuff, and then realize they do it because there is some dolt out there who would do it.

Does the bike shop have a used car type guy named Vinny doing the financing?

Here's one of my bikes. '85 Trek 410, owned it since new. Rode it to see Pope John Paul in Phoenix in '87. Gave in to the hot rod urge last year and put a set of FleaBay Ksyriums and a Selle Italia saddle on the ol' girl. Front sprockets and downtube shifters are original low-level Campy. Old-school toeclips, cuz I won't change my shoes to ride:
