A question...
I am not going to be using the "clip in" type of pedals on the PX-10, instead going with the old fashioned original style instead. What is everyone using for riding shoes? Tennis shoes or something more specialized? Joe

If you are going to use a bike shoe, they have the advantage of a stiff sole and cinch down ratchets or velcro. Old school cleats that have a recess for the pedal can still be found.
A flexible shoe is not optimal. Probably a mountain bike style would be best. On the other hand, old knees really like the Speed Play pedal. ![]()

You've got yourself a vintage steed, get yourself some vintage zaps.

What's the word on "Fat Bikes"?
Are these one trick pony's? A flash-fad (like fixies)? Or a legitimate branch of off-road cycling? I took this pic at my LBS - its the owner's bike. ![]() |

They work in the snow, on the beach and starting to see them all year round. Some guys around here have some neat blogs on adventure trips with them. Think riding frozen rivers, waterfalls and the shoreline of Lake Superior in northern Mn. I have a couple miles on one, and they are fun. The Moonlander is kinda on the heavy side but in this class who cares.

The owner says it's the most fun bike he has. He says it floats great on snow, but is an amazing plain ol' trail bike, as it has gobs of traction, and is very comfortable. It also does not require the maintenance of a suspension bike. He'll be racing it in a fat bike class this year. It does look fun, but his copy is way too big for me to ride to try out, and I also wonder how much of his pitch was sales vs. honest opinion. |

I find any "mountain bike" shoe works fine w/ old-school pedals and toe clips. Their soles are stiff enough that your feet don't get sore/tired, and they have enough tread to grip the pedal. In fact, I wonder if you couldn't put a stiffener material inside a pair of old-school track flats, ones w/o too much padding in the sole. Something like Mens Nike Zoom Waffle Racer 8 - Track Spikes on SALE

That's funny about the Dettos. I had a pair of those and hated them. Neither that or Sidis, Vittoria, or a few other brands. THere weren't too many choices back then. I even went to that bike shop in Milan, Detto Pietro's, the last time we were there.

If you want to ride around in a semi truck all day long, then ride that. Climbing on that thing must be fun. Instant skinny and lose your gut in three rides because you have to work 10 times as hard to get going. No fun unless going downhill in the snow or heavy sand.

Think the first fat bikes were "invented" in Alaska.
