Get used to not having a tree. You ask about kids: For the first 3 Christmas trees after my son was born the ornament were only on the top half of the tree. If he could reach it, it came down. We also put 50lb dumbbells on the stand so he wouldn't pull the tree over.

My 2 year old took a metal stick and started bashing the glass ornaments baseball style. The bottom half of the tree is pretty sparse now.
