We aggressively go after handicapped parking w/o tag here at the college. We have one handicapped spot reserved for a specific employee, he is paralyzed from mid-chest down. Fines for all handicapped spots are state mandated. I've seen a few people have "their" tags confiscated by our PD since they were using grandma's or whatever. First offense state wide is a warning and the true registered owner of hte tag has to pick it up from the PD - second one state wide is a revocation of handicapped permit parking...

Decal reserved spaces we get aggressive about *except* the first week or two of the term, and during finals. Fine is $15, officers try and associate the vehicle registration with a student. If they can, a flag is placed on the student record and no grades or registration for next term or graduation if they have outstanding tickets. Ones they can't associate to a particular student get stuck in a database, repeat offenders get booted. The fines from decal parking and booting to into the "President's Scholarship Fund"

Having caved in on this issue and others, it's another milestone of codleing to the nitwits who want a union here. The union wins without even being here. Makes me want to puke.

We have the same here. My 1991 BMW 318is gets 30mog, but isn't new enough to qualify.

My wife works for a university. One universal thing for every university is lack of parking. She has some funny stories of parents coming to plead the case of their little snowflake. One girl got a ticket once or twice a week for a semester. Her fine was well over a grand. No graduation, no transcript until it was paid in full.

I had a hip replacement last August. I got a temporary handicap permit during the recovery. It is still valid but I don't use it anymore.

In CA the fines are biggest for parking illegaly in a handicapped spot. Cheaper to park in the middle of the street, at a hydrant, or a red zone.

I was at one of the local hospitals.
They had some of the closest parking to the front door reserved for hybrid cars.
About a dozen spaces.

How do they enforce that?
Tow you away? Ticket?

It pisses me off to see so many "apparently" able-bodied people using them. But then I get to wondering if maybe they just had a heart attack or something. In my frustration I just commit myself to never using one.

Yep, had a friend pull up in a handi spot to let his wife out of the car, cop was on foot and gave him a ticket as he backed out of the spot. IIRC it was over $500.

what you and trkkoid seem to be missing is that the mall or other parking lot is private property

someone owns it - capiche?

I get it tho - you guys do not respect the rights of owners to manage their own property.

I work with a guy, actually he's one of our IATSE 44 local reps. Was a propmaster and used to desert race with McQueen, Malcom Smith, etc. Took a tumble back in the late 80's and is now a parapalegic, confined to a wheelchair, has the van with the lift, the whole nine.

He volunteers with Oxnard PD driving around the shopping centers, parks and other places and wears a vest and has his ticket book. He tells me some wild stories about what a-holes people can be when he writes them up. I mean, here's a guy, in a wheelchair citing you for illegal handicap parking and you're going to get pissed? Tickets are $375 and he snaps a photo for "evidence". And the tickets are valid for both public AND private property.

His only reimbursement is knowing he is keeping the spaces clear for the people who need them and he gets a fuel allowance which he saves up till mid December and buys $25 Visa gift cards that he hands out to random families at Big Lots and Goodwill for their Christmas shopping. I think we need more people like Ron H.

I had a bad car accident in my 83 944 back in August and got a metal plate with pins and screws to put my shattered pelvis back together, so needless to say, I was in a wheelchair/walker for 3.5 months. I never even considered trying to get a parking pass because that's just not who I am, and really got pissed a couple times as my wife helped me through the parking lot in a wheel chair going by idiots in tall 4x4s that are just jumping out of thier trucks while parked in the handicap spots.

I really wanted to yell at them for being so selfish and stupid, but I just didn't know the situation.

Where traffic cops have no jurisdiction.

Stops sign, etc.
Only the Disabled/Handicapped spaces that cite the penal/traffic code on the sign.
Not 'made up', 'feel good', 'eco-friendly' spaces where NO ACTUAL LAW is involved.

If they want to put up a 'No Trespassing' sign, maybe.

Hmmm, dont think you have to bow down. You could choose not to go there....Curious, if I go to your house, don't I have to follow your rules. If I'm a smoker, I might have to go outside to smoke. Or maybe you've let it be known that you don't want cars parked in your driveway. Or maybe I could just say **** it and park on your lawn because I'm not gonna bow down.

Nice try.

The public does not need to acquire permission before entering these "private lots".

And at a lot when multiple businesses share the same lot, then what?

Point is, if there was a sign posted that said only green cars can park here and all others will be towed at owners expense. If you park your red car there and it gets towed, your ass out. Its private property, they make the rules on their property. Not sure why that's so difficult for you to understand.

I used to work with a hellish woman (absolutely no redeeming qualities) who illegally obtained a handicapped parking placard to use because she was too lazy to walk her fat azz from a regular parking spot.
