Recommended movie thread...

Found a few threads about certain movies, but none about movies you like in general.

How about recommending a good movie to watch. Rules are simple.

State the genre of the movie (action, drama, suspense, chick flick, etc.)

Short description of why it is good (no spoilers please.)

Where to get it (netflix, amazon, blockbuster, etc.)

Fandango - (1985) - college buddy/road movie - some of the funniest, but believable dialogue and situations you'll ever see in this type of movie - also poignant in places - a relatively unknown gem - don't know where you can get it, but make sure you do. You will thank me.

Title-Grosse Point Blank

Why? John Cusack, Dan Ackroyd, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Piven and Alan Arkin in a comedy about a hit man and his ten year class reunion. Did I mention a cameo by Benny "The Jet" Urquidez?

Forgot about Fandango. Excellent movie. Liked Costner's performance.

Drama- The Right Stuff. Good movie about the Mercury program. Shows the breed of hero that existed back then. Well acted (Ed Harris was exceptional as well as a good performance by Fred Ward.) I borrowed the last copy I watched from the local library.

Comedy- O Brother, Where Art Thou? Based in part on Homer's Odyssey. One of the most quotable movies out of Hollywood in the last few years (outside of The Big Lebowski.) Good performances by both Clooney and Goodman. The movie soundtrack is excellent. Last watched on basic cable tv a few months ago (TNT?)

^+1 on Fandango and Breaker Morant (Rule .303).

IMHO best movie ever:
To Kill a Mockingbird - "Miss Jean Louise, miss Jean Louise, stand up -- your father's passing . . . "

Sports - Drama
Blind Side - true story, hot Sandra Bullock; Tim McGraw really can act
Remember the Titans - true story, esprit de corps overcomes racism, good sound track, Denzel at his finest IMHO
Friday Night Lights - true story, Billy Bob is really good in this . . .
We are Marshall - true story, one of Kate Mara's 1st big roles
Pride of the Yankees - Lou Gehrig's story - one to watch as a couple; can't go wrong w/Gary Cooper & Teresa Wright
Hoosiers - true story, IMHO one of Hackman's best

Shoot 'em Up / Action
Reservoir Dogs - guns, great cast, excellent soundtrack
Transporter 1 and 3 - fast cars and @ss kicking
Shoot 'em Up - brass flying everywhere
Kick-Ass - words can't describe; Kick-Ass 2 coming out this summer
Formula 51 - kicking @ss with golf clubs wearing a kilt. Exploding Meatloaf a bonus
Hero - awesome kung fu
Ip Man - awesomer kung fu
Legend of Drunken Master - awesomest kung fu
(Leon) The Professional - lots of guns, Jean Reno, Gary Sinise, and a very young Natalie Portman

With Cool Cars & Chase Scenes
Bullitt - 'nuff said
Le Mans - 917s and Ferrari V12s at full wail . . .
The Rock - chase scene through SF honors Bullitt
Gone in 60 Seconds (both, but I prefer 2000 over 1974) - 2000 has great sound track, awesome car chases, skanky Jolie; 1974 crashed more cars in one movie than any other up to that point . . .
Ronin - honorable mention; Audi S8
Quantum of Solace - honorable mention; Aston Martins
Grand Prix (if for no other reason than to remember James Garner could really drive)
On Any Sunday - a classic about motorcycle racing; introduced me to trials riding and Malcolm Smith was a genius on two wheels

Don't really fit into a category I can think of but worth watching anyway
Repo Man (1984 w/Emilio Estevez) - strangely addicting 'B' movie
Comfort and Joy (1984) - ice cream wars in London
Mother, Jugs, and Speed - Cosby, Welch, Keitel -- tear-@ssing around in ambulances
The Astronaut Farmer - Billy Bob tells the U.S. government to kiss his @ss; he's going into space

War / Military
Saving Private Ryan - honor and sacrifice, presented with great respect
The Unit (series) - inside look into Deltas (and on DVD you can FF through the spouse & family cr@p)
Band of Brothers - true, great storytelling, one of the best ensemble casts I've seen
Last Samurai - best samurai action movie since any of Kurosawa's work, if you can get past Tom Cruise . . .

The Great Santini

Drama, Netflix DVD only, no streaming

"Ace fighter pilot Bull Meechum (Robert Duvall) understands the ins and outs of war but has a tough time comprehending peace, especially where his family is concerned."

My dad was a military flight instructor. Watching The Great Santini triggers some painful memories from my childhood, if not a little PTSD.

Drama- Hachi: A Dog's Tale. Story of how devoted our four legged friends can be. The correct response when someone asks is "I have a piece of dust in my eye." or "Welders flash, their not tears." I wouldn't let any child under 10 watch this unless they immensely enjoyed old yeller. Available most likely at your local library and Amazon.

Thread from the dead...

Movie: The End

comedy

Burt Reynolds finds out he is going to die and tries to wrap things up in his life. I laughed so hard at the scene with Robby Benson and Burt Reynolds that I couldn't breath. That and the glass table are screen classics.

Available at Blockbuster.

I consider myself fortunate indeed. My father ex chopper pilot Vietnam era, DFC numerous Bronze Stars and Air Medals. Later flew F4 and F15 as liason with USAF. While not absolutetly true, my friends thought of my household like the Cleevers. But also, my HS friends were intimidated by him despite fact that only 5'8". Some said scared.. lol.

Never could relate to Santini b/c seemed over top from my experiences both at home and with my friends parents... but.. never know...

Damn; can't believe I forgot Taking Chance w/Kevin Bacon. Plenty of eye dust and welder's flash. IMHO should be required viewing every Memorial Day.
