Looks like that asteroid may have sent some scouts ahead to thrill some Russians with a little excitement...

This is interesting (and unconfirmed): "According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers."

by the time it is at 20 km altitude it would already have slowed down considerably, at 10 KM even more.. reports say it exploded at 10 km.

According to this article, car sized meteors hit the earth every month or two! Perhaps they mean 'earths atmosphere' but still something to wonder.
