I do not see any dilema. You gave him his asking price in cash and he gave you the goods. End of story. If he was a very close friend or good family member.......possibly more discussion. How I would (and have done) address it.

Back in the 80's, I used to go to swap meets. You could always find good deals on things because there wasn't the ability for sellers to get appraisals with a few strokes of the keyboard. Now, everything is priced accordingly and no "screaming deals" to be had.

Anytime I sell something, i search the internet first to get an idea of what the market will bear. If this guy was too stupid or lazy to find out what Fuchs are going for these days, eff him. The only way this bonehead would be getting them back was for $800, Kharma be damned.

And by the way, I don't think the wheels were stolen. I think he let it get around the shop that he sold 4 Fuchs for a couple hundred bucks and got razzed.

Just to be clear.. I didn't mean that I thought the wheels were stolen, just that hypothetically the only way that sale wasn't final would be if he had recieved stolen goods...anything else is the shops fault/problem.

I woke up this morning feeling pretty good about the whole thing. It still hurts to know I let those 16x8s go, but in the end this is all just "stuff". I don't want to let stuff rule my life.

My wife pulled into the driveway and announced that someone had hit her side mirror in the parking lot. Of course they didn't leave a note. Luckily there was minimal damage and I was able to get it back together. Figures!

Nah... Rick, it will all come back to you... you'll see. One word that comes to mind among our community is 'Integrity', and you just set an example. Yeah, there are definitely a lot of greedy a-holes out there too, but in my book you're not one of them.

It was definitely good ju ju to return them but, given the circumstances I wouldn't have judged you if you hadn't... sounded like a big PITA and that was the easiest way to make it go away.

Maybe. I did ask point blank to verify that the wheels were not being resold when I gave them back. He said "No sir, these are going back to the owner. I wouldn't put you through all this to make a few hundred bucks."

I figure if he lies that badly he's got more problems than selling wheels for 25% of their value.

Dunno iffn I'd just give em back or not, but I'd prolly try to work something out where both parties were equally satisfied.

The only possible moral implications I could see are if the wheels were stolen, or if the guy selling them was not mentally competent to sell them, (ie developmentally disabled) or if you tricked some little kid into selling the wheels off of his dad's car. Apart from that, it seems like you were at the right place at the right time.

Disagree.

If the seller's story is true, he sold the wrong wheels and the true owner, the 930 customer, is now out a set of wheels he did not want to sell. Who's screwed here? The 930 owner. If you could make him right by returning the wheels, though you may not have a legal requirement to do so, that's a moral decision.
