How long is your daily commute?

... and how does it compare to the average for your area?

Stumbled upon this interesting app that relies on census data. You can switch to your zip code in the upper right, and mouse over different areas to get the underlying averages:

Takes me about 25 minutes or so, depending on the lights. Of course, that's on a bicycle...

(that's a way cool app!)

masraum 03-07-2013 06:49 PM

Now 22mi, 25-30 mins. Most of my commutes in the last 12-15 years have been about 25ish miles, but I did have a few years of 11 miles and a few months of 35 miles.

Scott R 03-07-2013 06:52 PM

12 mins by car, 45 mins by train.

BRPORSCHE 03-07-2013 06:56 PM

I used to do 50 miles, 50 minutes each way for three years. That started killing me so I switched to 2 miles, 5 minutes and am much happier.

Its amazing the way it can change your life.

Jrboulder 03-07-2013 07:11 PM

30 min by car. About 25 miles.

VINMAN 03-07-2013 07:16 PM

35 mile drive door to door. About an hour each way on a good day.
But I take a different route every day just to break up the monotony

GH85Carrera 03-07-2013 07:17 PM

How long is your daily commute?

8.5 miles. Between 10 to 14 minutes depending on the two light I go through. For 25 years it was just 3/4 of a mile. One day I made that trip from start to stop in 55 seconds.

legion 03-07-2013 07:18 PM

10 minutes. Which really sucks, because when I bought the house, it was 3 minutes.

red-beard 03-07-2013 07:23 PM

1 mile, about 3 minutes.

JR Indy 03-07-2013 07:25 PM

10 minutes, ocean view all the way.

Bill Douglas 03-07-2013 07:54 PM

It used to be 45 to 50 minutes.

Now I've got it down to 60 seconds - seriously, I'm full time renovating the house next door.

kanadary 03-07-2013 07:55 PM

I work in two locations depending on the day. The shorter one is about 15-18 mins by car and the longer one is 45 mins there and about an hour home. I make up for it by working virual or a closer hoteling station which is only 8 mins away

aigel 03-07-2013 08:33 PM

I once did a 1h 10 min average (one way) commute. It was killing me. I like to be within 30 min or less. Like Tom says, it is life changing. Big commutes are huge black holes, sucking up 50% of your spare time. NO thanks.

Note - if you have a solid 8h job, it may be a little different. But if you find yourself at work 9+ hours, your day is done with a long commute on top of that.

13 minutes on my bike

dipso 03-07-2013 09:00 PM

I like my commute. Sometimes I take the long way just for the drive.
If I don't spend at least 20 to 30 minutes driving before and after work, I'll go crazier.
I do a lot of work in my neighborhood. I'll leave my house and go for a 20 minute drive before I come back and work across the street.
Driving is good, silence is good.

Tobra 03-07-2013 09:09 PM

If I hit the lights right, I can make it in the car in about 5-7 minutes, on a bicycle 15, maybe 20 minutes. The speed limit is not higher than 40 mph, all surface streets, couple miles, not including any trips to the hospital.

Since last November, on Friday afternoons, I have been covering the office of a gal that is out on maternity leave. That is about 25 miles one way from my office. 30 minutes to drive down there at noon, over an hour driving home during rush hour. She is not due until April, been on bed rest. If I were going to be doing that crap much longer, I would go borrow a motorcycle from one of my brothers.

rnln 03-07-2013 10:39 PM

around 10... steps from my bed room to my home office. Sometimes, I missed driving in the sun.

Paul T 03-08-2013 01:31 AM

About 70 minutes door to door - 1/2 car, 1/2 train.

Rick V 03-08-2013 01:35 AM

Roughly 30 mins. All back country twistie roads. I like the commute, I can settle down in my own little music filled bubble, enjoy some fun driving and just let work fade away before I hit the door.

Oh Haha 03-08-2013 02:43 AM

20 minutes each way. It's exactly 19.75 miles to my office. I take a different way a couple times a week just to break up the monotony.

slow&rusty 03-08-2013 02:44 AM

In the morning 20ish minutes, an hour sometimes in the afternoon..gotta love Houston Traffic.

URY914 03-08-2013 02:48 AM

7 miles. Three traffic lights.

Outback Porsche 03-08-2013 02:50 AM

30 min, 40 min if I strike a road train leaving town.

wdfifteen 03-08-2013 02:55 AM

4.5 country miles to the office. Average here is 23.2. I seldom drive over 45 mph on my commute.
Lately been remodeling a house that's 4 miles away the other direction. Lowes and HD are 12 miles. I can run a tank of gas through the truck in one week (350 miles) without leaving the county.

on2wheels52 03-08-2013 03:01 AM

Never more than 7 minutes, 3 stop signs 4 stop lights. On a good day I never have to put a foot down.
Jim

onewhippedpuppy 03-08-2013 03:03 AM

About 7 minutes. When I worked elsewhere it was 20-25, I didn't mind the opportunity to wind down on my way home as others have mentioned. Stop and go rush hour would drive me the most insane, no thanks.

VaSteve 03-08-2013 03:10 AM

Too long. Much too long.

NY65912 03-08-2013 03:11 AM

I am 10 mi as the crow flies from home to office. It takes 35-40 min at 5:30 AM to reach the office and 55 min by street or 60-90 min to get home via the highway (22 mi). I am going from the most southern to the most northern part of Brooklyn.

azasadny 03-08-2013 03:13 AM

It was 100 miles a day until last July, now it's 20 miles a day.

speedracing944 03-08-2013 03:39 AM

About 30 miles or about 35 - 40 minutes depending on traffic in the last 5 miles which is a heavily traveled artery into the city. The other 25 miles are back country roads which are a blast to drive. There are a couple extended routes which run along the river and are joy to blast through. That detour takes an extra 10 minutes but allows me to decrease stress levels by an additional 50% which makes it worthwhile.

Speedy:)

David McLaughlin 03-08-2013 03:57 AM

10 hour days, 35 mile commute adding an additional 45 minutes each way to an already long day.

jyl 03-08-2013 04:15 AM

About 12-14 minutes in, 15-18 back, depending on effort.

KNS 03-08-2013 04:19 AM

One hour each way (60 miles one way). With the usual 12 hour shift my day is 14 hours everyday. If I get off late it can be a 15 or 16 hour day.

Jferr006 03-08-2013 04:38 AM

40 mins.. its not so bad though I, I get to rock out the whole way there. Hubs commutes from RVA to DC.

zipinitaly 03-08-2013 04:53 AM

47 miles each way. Around an hour in the morning on a bus and the afternoon commute is never less than 75 minutes, can be as long as 180 minutes between the metro and slug line.
That is life in N VA....

In Tampa that means about 30 minutes. ;)

When I am not doing a 30 sec commute to my home office, my commute involves planes & rental cars & it can take up to 6 hours although I have had much, much longer.

Ian

VINMAN 03-08-2013 04:58 AM

To those with five and ten min commutes, I hate you.........

asphaltgambler 03-08-2013 04:59 AM

@45-50 minutes. In the Northern Va area that's very good, but I also carpool which allows us to use the HOV lanes on Rt. 66 which typically is very congested. Plus I arrive at the office @7:20am and leave by 4.
