I seriously doubt you can patent basic chemistry. Application of electricity to water will do this. We learned this in elementary school chemistry right? Use a solar cell instead of a battery. It would have to be a pretty unique process to patent I would imagine.

Cracking H from O can be done, solar powered cracking is by definition a FAR cheaper alternative once the infrastructure has been built.

Cracking water with sunlight

At the core of the reactor are two honeycomb-like ceramic chambers coated with oxygen-deficient ferrite structures containing zinc and nickel. At high enough temperatures (800-1200°C) these materials strip water of its oxygen, leaving hydrogen gas to bubble away (Zn0.xNi(1-0.x)Fe2O4 + yH2O Zn0.xNi(1-0.x)Fe2O4+y + yH2). The oxidised materials must then be recycled, driving off their collected oxygen as gas, in a separate reaction step at 1000-1200°C.

so it's not electrolysis. it's using a catalyst to do the splitting at high temps

I have been approached on 2 different solar based water to hydrogren projects. In both cases my attitude was "Cash in Advance on all sales".
