Clark started out driving races with OUT seat Belts !
Read his story, and then the NASCAR idiots just stand out as clowns

In my lifetime, Fangio, Moss and yes, Earnhardt Sr. It's not the type of cars but the type of driver.

Sorry just don't get the Earnhardt thing. A good driver doesn't need to hit people to win. Why to you think he was called the intimidator? Of course he intimidated other drivers. If he was behind someone he would just hit them & crash em' out. That isn't what being a good driver is.

How about Bill Elliot two laps down at Talladega in1985 and making them both up without a caution AND not crashing anyone out. NOW that's a driver, (and awesome car).

Awesome Bill from Dawsonville is up there on the list. Definitely top 5 material. John Force, Shirley Muldowney, Don Garlits are in the mix too. There are no open wheelers I can think of that rank anywhere near the top of the charts.

Best driver proven in all environments is still to to be determined...

Bring back the carburetor small tire open wheels.
And unlimited.
Build a track which incorporates FI with autocross with off-roading.
Randomize the equipment assignment.
Same vehicle.
Different drivers.

There are many top candidates. Sure, Mario comes to mind because of all the disciplines while John Force has done just one to an all time record of successive championships. In that vein, you have to consider Steve Kinser. If the criteria is in an open wheel car on a road course, that eliminates many worthy candidates.

Each sector has its king and then the one to dethrone eventually comes along. There was a time that several of us would have named Alain Prost as the best. I still greatly admire him.

LOL, I hope you're not serious. The others had to turn right AND left.

Amazing Jim Clark... no I should add remarkable!

Going back a little further and would pick Juan Fangio.

Two others on the top of my list, similar in some respects are Bruce McLaren and Mark Donahue. Their records speak for themselves but what I appreciate was their engineering minds integrated into their driving talents. Raced everything in a transitional era all the way to the brute CANAM machines.

Nowadays,- turning LEFT in a car thats NOT a car, supported by VERY big backers and doing back back flips off the roof ..makes a good driver ???? LOL.
The New guys like everything else are just a cheap counterfeit copy of what was real.
