My past experience with defense is relax, very relax. When I was younger, I afraid I won't get enough technical skill, so I quit and joined start up .com companies, one after another. But now, when we are all older, especially with family, I think it's best for you and your family.

That's a good way to put it (and it applies to most any job). I had 19 years with McDonnel Douglas/Boeing before leaving. I grew tired of Boeing's philosophy of working people to death until they burned out. During a performance review, I was chastised for taking 3 days off when my daughter was born. Vacation was routinely denied. Quality of life sucked.

But...the work was interesting and there are really a bunch a great people there. Jump in with both feet and be one of the people who "gets things done" and you will be rewarded. ...Mostly with 10-hour work days and no vacation...

congrats, i work at the lazy b but not on the floor, in both evt and rtn. if you can, take one of the car pools and after a few months look for opportunities up north. it'll still be a commute but there's lots of guys that work in evt and live in mt vernon. or move to somewhere inbetween the two since you never know when you'll be moved.. while in renton i like the whistle stop, cedar river bbq, and i know some will say.. really.. popeye's

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

Crusty-
I recall gleaning somewhere on this forum that you are an FCC with an NEC 1121 IIRC. I leaned heavily on my experience as an FC1 NEC 1121 to acquire this job. There are some good jobs out there for guys with our skill-set. I had to do some additional study on CNC programming, and general PC knowledge, but was otherwise very well prepared for the skill assessment test they required.

Noted! Thanks for the tip on food. Still have to go through the paperwork shuffle, but that's all it will be really. House went up for sale today, so we shall see how that goes too. I can suck up the commute for a while if need be. It's second shift which is a bummer, but at least I should be able to skip most of the traffic.

Just got off the phone with HR. I cleared all hiring contingencies (background, urinalysis etc.) and am starting work on May 10th! Now to sell this house so I don't have to spend three hours in the car every day!

It's hard to beat walking into the shop and seeing a line of airplanes. I never stop thinking that it's pretty cool.

Ledhed, you might consider keeping your Mt Vernon place as a retreat. The pace of life and quality of life in MV/ Skagit Valley is unlike anywhere else in western Washington in my opinion. I think you will find the pace of life and quality of life in the Seattle area to be decidedly unpleasant after living in such an idyllic place. It will be a huge comfort to have a retreat from the insanity here, a place you can go to let the stress melt away. Please consider this before deciding to sell.

The Skagit Valley in today's newspaper:
http://seattletimes.com/html/pacificnw/2020743242_pacificpskagit21.html

Some ideas -- joining a vanpool/ carpool with co-workers, house-sharing with co-workers so you have a base here, renting a small place for yourself in a nice area like Des Moines or Normandy Park close to the water...

Kanadary has great advice up above!!!
