The Cowboys starring The Duke. One of the handful of movies he died in. Also on my list is The Shootist, co-starring Ronnie Howard. Another movie he died in, and one of my favorites too.

True Grit - John Wayne
Once Upon A Time In The West - Charles Bronson
Quigley Down Under - Tom Selleck
Appaloosa - Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen
The Frisco Kid - Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder

Now, don't laugh, but Cowboys & Aliens had the makings of a GREAT western, but then it got stupid with all the alien bullsnot.

ledhedsymbols 04-17-2013 07:40 PM

You know, I forgot about Quigley Down Under... I grew up in Forsyth Montana. Home of the Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match!

I know you have a young son. Some good ones are Shakiest Gun In The West with Don Knotts and Rhustler's Rhapsody with Tom Berenger, you'll both get a kick out of them.

Others are Tom Horn, The Cowboys, Shane, Stagecoach, McClintock, Rio Bravo and anything with Lee Van Cleef (badass). James Coburn and Charles Bronson made some good ones also (Chato's Land, Duck You Sucker, etc.)

craigster59 04-17-2013 08:05 PM

Also West World, The Son's Of Katie Elder.

I was the fortunate recipient of the "Complete Collection Of Wild Wild West" for Christmas. If you can't be entertained by Robert Conrad and Ross Martin as James West/ Ar****s Gordon and their "James Bond" devices and cool ass railroad car, then you don't know how good old TV was.

Geronimo '74 04-17-2013 09:46 PM

Once upon a time in the West.

varmint 04-17-2013 09:46 PM

the searchers stands as one of the greatest movies ever made. period.

fort apache
stagecoach
yellow sky
high noon
destry rides again
will penny
the shootist
blazing saddles

some that are sort of westerns,
flesh and bone
near dark / cowboy vampires
tender mercies
raising arizona
The Good, the Bad, and the Weird / chinese kung fu imitation of sergio leone imitating john ford
the quick and the dead

some of the worst,
butch cassidy and the sundance kid is effectively unwatchable because of it's disco soundtrack.
i'm normally a fan of violence, but peckinpah is waaaaay over rated
wild wild west
and you notice how no one ever names dances with wolves?

Great movie... Charles Bronson's best IMO.

sc_rufctr 04-18-2013 03:52 AM

I'm not sure why but I loved "Roster Cogburn"... I always watch it when it's on late at night. John Wayne at his best.

A lot of negative things were said about Mr Wayne just after he died.
All BS of course. The guy was humble, generous and caring. A true Hollywood legend.

No one has said Hannie Caulder yet? Come on. Raquel Welch wearing nothing but a poncho and a holster for a good part of the movie. I think there were other actors in it and i'm pretty sure it's a western, but I didn't see too much else outside of Raquel...:D

Best non-Eastwood western ever.
