best way to ship wheels across country ?

Looks like I have sold my Borbet wheels so I'll have to get them packed for shipping. They are 17 x 7.5 and 9. I will send two packages but what's the best packing material to make these survive cross country trip ? I'll probably use UPS as they have a store about 3 blocks from the house. Any tips appreciated, they are shipping to a business address if that matters.

I usually ship with;

tires on
cardboard or other material covering the facings
wheels strapped together in pairs

If shipping sans tires then it may pay to have them boxed individually and foamed.

Greyhound is usually cheapest. I had 4 rims sent from California to ND. Two per box, layer of cardboard between and some 1/4" foam and cardboard on each end. Arrived in pristine shape.

Put the centers towards the middle.

For bare wheels I've simply boxed them. You can get bubble wrap and boxes from Walmart for cheap. For wheels and tires I have done as stomachmonkey describes, face the wheel surfaces with cardboard. Btw, that's how Tire Rack ships a wheel/tire combo.

Go to a local tire store and get some wheel boxes, they will most likely have the packing material in them..

and they will be free. I have shipped quite a few wheels with boxes from places like American Tire, no extra packaging needed. FedEx Ground, five days coast to coast.

FedEx or ups ground works, so does packagexpress.

Went to six different tire shops and no one had boxes. Bought 20 x 20 x 20 boxes from UPS store. Placed a 7.5 " and 9 " in each box with packing material ended up at 63.2 lbs. per box which = about $65.00 per box to ship. Didn't change much between UPS or FED EX. Much more than I anticipated but I'm a man of my word and will ship for the agreed price.

If you haven't shipped it yet, sign up for a FedEx account. I save an easy 20% booking through my online account vs taking it into the store. No cost or minimum use for the account.

I opened up a FED EX account last night and it looks like I can ship the wheels for $125.00 including insurance for 800.00. Thanks for the tip.
