It's started - Exodus from CA

At least in my life, it's started.

My first friend and associate to leave - certainly no the last. He's a heavy hitter, probably 3-500K per year. Sophomore and Junior in college. So long CA. Closed escrow on a house in TN. I guess your dollars go a long way there. He's only 51 - will work from there. He's a broker, and will come back a few times a year, but will document his time out of the state. Every dinner party etc. I go to now this is always discussed.

Much lower cost of living in TN. State income tax rate is less than half that in CA. Electricity is 37% less. He automatically gets a raise the day he moves!

The higher earners in this state are particularly mobile. Not so much the poor or the state and municipal workers. Who will pay their salaries in the future?

Will the last one out please turn out the lights...

TN is quite a beautiful place. I'd consider it myself. A friend of mine who I worked with back in CA in 2004-5 left himself for Tennessee but ended up coming back after a year, finding the "redneck culture" intolerable. YMMV I guess. I couldn't stand being in a redneck-infested area myself either but I'm sure there are plenty of areas that don't give that impression (I always suspected he hadn't given it enough of a chance).

The exodus from CA has been going on for a while. In a few years it'll be only illegals, gangbangers and a few (very few) others. Very sad. It's not the place it once was. I'm glad I got to spend 10+ years of my life there at the tail end of its heyday.

My friend also moved from Cal to Tenn a few years ago.

He was part of this:

Nissan Moving North American Headquarters

"The nearly 1,300 people employed at Nissan's Los Angeles-area headquarters work in management, marketing, advertising, sales and distribution and dealership development for North America. Ghosn said he expects about half the California employees will move to Tennessee, but he's not sure of the exact number.

Ghosn cited lower real estate and business taxes as major reasons for the move.

"The costs of doing business in Southern California are much higher than the costs of doing business in Tennessee," he said."

California has the best climate in the country. Add to that the natural beauty and draw of activities, and there will always be demand for folks to live here.

I did a job in TN., beautiful state, wonderful people...

But there is a reason us locals put up with Cali... one word... weather...

And no one ever wrote "I wish they all could be Tennessee girls." and yes there were/are hot girls in TN.

All manufacturing will leave CA because of the high costs... but agriculture, media, and .com will keep us going for a long, long time...

Sorry, the revolution will not be televised.

Only if we stop f'ing ourselves with stupid laws and leach people out of their money and be business friendly, still it is the best place in the world

MUCH higher cost of living as well.

It's all relative.

Yeah, no companies in California have a prayer of succeeding.

Not that much higher, and the difference in pay more than compensates. She's an engineer. Not that much demand in TN.

moved from Marin County, great weather/environment/etc, to VA. Renting a house right now 2.5 times bigger than the one I still own there for twice the rent I get in CA. I wrote a check for 6 months taxes in NoCal for twice the yearly taxes here. Premium gas is less than $3.49, insurance is less, groceries are the same, but eating out is somewhat less.

However, where I was 45 min from Russian River/Dry Creek appellations I am now 15 minutes from Total Wine. And where I could get to Sears in 35 min, I am now 2 hours from VIR.

In my view, it is much easier to retire in this state than in CA.

It rained last night and cleaned off all the smog. The sun's out this morning and you can see for miles with crazy 15 mph wind which is rare. 61 degree right now and I am freezing my fat ass off. I hope you are freezing your butts off at DC.

When I "retire" in about five years, I plan on selling my SoCal house, and moving somewhere else. I may keep my condo in Oxnard and visit during the winter. I went to High school in Oak Ridge, TN, very nice, mild winters, some snow, but humid in the summer, not like Houston, but humid.

If you don't think CA is expensive just don't bother pricing a house, utilities, gas, food, taxes, entertainment, etc in the midwest. You'll sleep better at night. You guys have awesome weather, but I'd rather be warm in my affordable 6 br/3.5 ba affordably priced home with the extra income to do fun things with my family and allow my wife to stay home with my kids. Everything is a trade-off in life, but I often wonder how my CA friends make that math work.
