Pretty scary day at the office today.

I work alone. Built and crawled on this stuff today. This is an old Tudor in So Cal, I didn't measure the roof pitch. But figured I was dead if something gave way.

Looks like I got lucky.

Here's a picture of the front. I did all the stain and varnish over the last 2 weeks. Now it is trim only. Those roof pitches are crazy.

I need to do all the metal flashing and piping on the roof, at the end. I have my fingers crossed. I'm keeping all ladder jacks and picks on site.
I'm just shooting eaves for a week.

Crazy is right. I wouldn't be climbing on that staging. A couple of nails in a 2X4 holding you up. I like how you taped off the brickwork though.

I had a house with a 12/12 pitch. I got on it once. Yikes.
Watched a chimney guy scramble up and down with no pro and leather shoes like it was terra firma.
Diffrent strokes.

Your staging is third world all the way; glad it held!

Did you guys ever see this one?

I am generally fairly scared of heights. A few of our rental houses have real steep pitches, and are high up from the street. I HATE going up there. I don't mind working off ladders, but once I am up on the roof, it is a whole different scenario.

The moss looks like it would give you some traction.

I had a chimney guy walk from one chimney to the other.

This is the inside, notice no ridge beam.

16D, doubled headed, buried deep. I figured the 16' 2"x4"s would be the most secure.
It was still nasty to look at. Once up top, not to bad.

The pitch of the roof is what was Fed up. If I shoved a 12' pick up there, I would be on my belly.
If i used the 8' I had to crawl out about 2' and hope it wouldn't slide. I

Overall a good day. I roped off the pick to the 2' x 4'. I had to move it twice for masking eaves and panting fascia.

I was losing sleep over this situation. I even put my cellphone in my pocket. So I could call for help if a ended up a pile on the ground.

Cheaper to rent a cherry picker. Safer, bigger platform. so you can work faster instead of having to get on and off the ladder.

Here if your working over 8' off the ground you must have fall suppression equipment and a place to attach it to. If a comp inspector saw what you were doing you would be shut down and fined (probably more than you would have made on the job). You can do what you want on your own property but if your working for someone else you have to follow the rules.

Exactly, funny how those that champion regulation somehow manage to not apply it to themselves. That being said, I see no real problem with what he did. I mean it's his ass if he falls, not some poor bastard employee. Looks like interesting work too, carry on.

My thought exactly - significant OSHA violation. You need fall protection. You may want to think about what you post online before hitting "send" but then again you're not exactly known for that... Glad you're okay. Please be safe out there.

I'm glad it worked out for you but honestly that staging looks hokey holding itself up; never mind with 150-200 pounds on board. This is one item I won't compromise on, if it takes a couple of extra hours to build a proper platform, so be it. A guys life and health are much more valuable than the job. Cheers

You definately shoulda tied off on a roof like that Dips. That slate is slippery as hell, plus its pretty frangilble. I've worked off plenty of roofs with pitches like that, yeah it can get hairy.

Be safe, dude.

The landscaping looked to be the problem with the CP. Also, they are expensive per day. Hard to keep price competitive when you have that overhead.

Sorry to say.

Even the pro's have been known to fall and die. I've seen some jobsites where after lunch the roofers smell like a brewery and are peeing off of the edges. Without going to PARF, I see many of the roofers are illegals too. Maybe I'm assuming but I've been around enough years in residential construction to see the crazy side. A crew leader will speak english but most of the others don't. Overall they do good roof work.

And about that stage.... nutz! Life is worth more than some fricken' home maintenance. Do it right or get someone else! NO EXCUSE

Dips- Sorry to unload on you. But believe me, I've seen the amateur to pro's make some foolish choices and costing them big time.

I knew a hot shot worker who excavated and laid sewer pipes and as required by OSHA had the trench boxes. Problem was, he never used them and only had them onsite,... wanted to make time and by not setting them in while working. He was crushed with a cave in after a stormy wet Spring weather. It doesn't take much to lose it.

Scaffold with adjustable pads, boards under the pads (so not to sink into the ground) is cheap to buy if you can't find a rental. Most of the time, you can set the scaffold around in shrubbery or landscape but at worst, tear out the bush or whatever. Replaceable.
