Battery Mat Question

The battery mat below is one of two, is 12 years old and has never been used.

The mat below has been in place for 12 years.

The residue (above and below) may be the result of the mat.

My questions are: what do the mats do? Are they useful?

I did not use a mat on the left side and it was relatively clean.

Thanks

I believe the mats are supposed to neutralize any minor acid spills. You've got a pretty big overflow of acid going on there, beyond what the mat is going to help with (or is that baking soda?).

Kurt, not baking soda. I haven't started the cleanup yet. That battery was relatively undisturbed for twelve years. I'll have to see what is under the old mat before I decide to replace it or not.
