box of grid squares

Those of you that spent any time in the military probably remember being sent off on a mission to get a box of grid squares or to check the armor on a vehicle with a ball-peen hammer. More or less picking on the new guy who doesnt know anything yet. I never really cared for this, probably because it happened to me.

Anyway, I just run into a brand new 2nd Lieutenant who was driving around post looking for the "free ice" point. I had a feeling his CO was messing with him as 1. no such place exists on the post I work at and 2. the poor kid didnt have a cooler or anyhting to put the ice in.

So I had him follow me back to my building where we have a big ice maker. We loaded up about 200 pounds of ice in trash bags and put it in the back of his Humvee. I hope his commander is waiting for the 2LT to show up with nothing but the look of defeat on his face...

You, and the opportunity to do what you did, are why I stayed in the military 26 years...beautiful stuff.

I got sent out to get 25 feet of flight line. Knew the drill, went to the movies, did it for two days. Let them in on the secret on the third day.

Bicycle shops version of it is to have them sort out ball bearing to find the Campy branded ones with the "c" stamped in them.

Auto parts stores, I had a manager that used to ask people to look up a boobalater valve. I didn't fall for that one, but later on, we used to call about radiator caps and cooling system components for bugs and corvairs and that sort of thing.

I got out as soon as my commitment was over because of stupid BS like this. I was serious about being a professional engineer and I was with a bunch of yahoos who thought we were in summer camp. I wonder what our military could do if they took their jobs seriously.

We had had a new project manager here looking for a metric crescent wrench one time....

What's sad is that such a thing actually exists now!

In the printing industry they use a bunch of color patches printed on the paper and it's called a "color bar".
Smart a$$ press operators will paint a yard stick multi-colored and tell the new guy "the head of the department needs this color bar right now, RUN!" Too funny.

at the airline, we had new flight attendants go ask the ramp people for the keys to the airplane. ..or we'd give them a garbage bag and ask them to collect an air sample from the cabin.

When I was in High School a teacher used to send difficult students from class to class looking for a "long stand" . By the time they made the rounds both teacher and student had the needed break.
