Is encouraging originality considered "trolling"?

After being away for a number of years, I've rejoined the forum, albeit with a goofy username (an old Ozzy reference) - and I'm finding that discussing things with a side toward safety and originality is being termed "trolling".

I'm confused - don't most car enthusiasts object to chopping up and modifying perfectly good classic sports cars? Isn't doing your own work (not paying a hotrod shop) a good idea, so that you both learn and ensure things are done right? Doesn't it make sense to routinely replace tires rather than see how long they'll last to save a buck?

Have I become old-fashioned?

You need to provide some examples here. The Porsche community generally seems to value originality, just look at the bazillion responses that the Magnus thread has received in the 911 tech forum.

Well, one example is my comparison of backdating to updating and slantnose conversions in the "backdating" thread. I mean, sure, you can backdate an SC and sell it to make a few bucks, especially if you cut corners and sell it to a yuppie who can't see that it's a hack job - but is it wrong to simply say that on Pelican now? Seems crazy. I used to love the Pelican forums; they seemed a sane place in a nutty internet - real enthusiasts with a sense of humor - now I'm not sure what's going on.

The group is pretty diverse both in gender/social/economic makeup and with automotive preferences. Thank heavens...

I would not be here if the only thing to see was a concours correct Porsche driven by some middle-aged rich dude. BORING!

I like the different ideas for car building, the eclectic mix of European/American/Japanese/Swedish, etc., car nuts here. I've learned more about everything from obscure cars, to diesel engines, to how to peel a hard cooked egg and make the best damn BBQ on the planet from this site.

Diggin' it baby!

The only constant is change...

Being an open Internet form there is bound to be some ebb and flow in ideas and opinions.

For instance when I started here a "chicks with cars" thread would have been seen as juvenile and ignored... now it has gone on for pages.

As far as modifying/customizing cars... in general we seem to have a pretty open minded group here, but lets keep those rotten Miata owners off this BBS!

You weren't really discussing things, you just posted a pretty straight forward strong opinion and stepped on some toes in the process.

You wrote this in the backdating thread...
"Backdating is the act of taking a perfectly good car and chopping it up to make it look older, to satisfy one's pretentious insecurity. Just my opinion. But unless you're wiling to spend 100k, the car will never be "right", and even then you'll devalue the car and eat the investment."

and...
"have some respect for a fine automobile. It will be around longer than you'll live; don't butcher it because you can't afford the car you really want. People are just going to laugh at a bad backdate/update job anyway, and like it or not 99%+ are bad."

and...
"Drinkin' the Koolaid and laughin' all day long at goofball cars."

and...
"Most buyers are chumps. Not so long ago they were buying slantnose conversions too - chopping up original cars is never the way to go. If you don't like it, sell it and buy something else. Hell, get a kit car or something."

So, you pretty much gave us your opinion of backdating and slammed the backdaters pretty hard in the process. Tramped on some toes and got called a troll. Now you ask if its trolling over here. I'll have to say yes. You just jumped right in and stirred up the pot. Just my opinion

I was just getting ready to post what Eric did. You're not just a troll, you're a blantantly obvious troll. Go back to blowing goats. Maybe you are better at that.

Now I wish I had saved/remembered some threads on Technical.

I don't know who goats is, don't care, but he has a partial point, though not at all about modification. Pretty much no matter what the mod, it can be undone and factory redone. So it's a pointless debate. And why be so brash?

But I have seen a few threads on Technical in the last several months where I'm thinking that the work the owner is doing now is going to the subject of a thread a few years from now, new owner posting, "Look what this idiot PO did to this car..."

And I've parted out enough cars from 69 to 87 to see a ton of crap work done, even by legitimate Independents, let alone an inexperienced shadetree with a new Craftsman tool set.

I see a lot of things done here that don't particularly agree with my taste in cars, but I'm not a dick about it. If you can't say anything nice... When a buddy introduces his new girlfriend, you don't pull him aside to talk about her horse face and fat ass.

That's right, everyone knows you're supposed to talk about her great personality.

Seriously, they're just things. Are you so shallow that the biggest problem in your life is how other people modify their cars?

Hey Hey Hey!
I represent that remark!

Actually, I have no problem with someone modifying a newer car to look like a longhood. To me, the early sheet metal and front end treatment was just right.
But having that look with more power and a G50? Mmmmm.

Best

So, are you saying that I've been going about this all wrong?

How about just stating your opinion without sounding like a pompous know-it-all rectum like you did in the backdating thread?

I agree that sometimes Pelican "isn't what it used to be"...particularly here in OT, and PARF. It sometimes has a "nastiness" that I don't much care for despite the tons of great folks that post here. "A few rotten apples" can indeed ruin a whole batch. Having just read the backdate thread in Tech to which you refer, I've got a pretty good impression of which kind of apple you are . We're a diverse group of car guys (and gals)...get over yourself.

ps: You've got an ugly dog and your girlfriend is fat
