Resurrecting an Old Bicycle

I had a roommate in college with a Raleigh Pro and he is the one who really encouraged me into cycling. Used to go on day and overnight rides with him. Anyone else get the "Velo News"?

I now have a Trek 2100 for my road bike bought back in the early 90's, which serves my purposes.

Ready to go to Morrow Bay on Wednesday. If I get motivated, when I get back, I may repack all the bearings. Top and bottom crown, crank, pedals. Also take apart and relube the cables.

Is the saddle leather very dry? You might want to treat it before putting weight on it. Ditto treating the rubber brake hoods.

Another thing you might do is drip some oil into the bearings (hubs, bottom bracket), just in case the grease is all dried out. The oil will protect the races a bit, until you have time to re-pack the bearings. Should only take ten minutes, lay bike on its side and drip into the bearings, then repeat on the other side. You're going to oil the chain anyway.

Later on, also remove seat post and stem, re-grease, and re-insert. Check spoke tension and wheel true. Replace brake pads as the rubber is likely hardened.

FYI, my favorite chain lube is Chain-L. It is a heavy oil, you warm the bottle in hot water, then apply one drop to each link, ride a couple minutes, wipe off excess.

Been slathering the saddle with Lexol, top and bottom. Good point on oiling the bearings, easy to do.
