Well said Jim. Just ask yourself Mike if it is okay for the neighbor to put his garbage with yours. How does that feel?

I wouldn't feel anything.
It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if a few homes around here put their garbage in one spot. In front of my House is perfectly fine.
Considering how much waste removal costs are always going up for the property owner, perhaps one designated area is the way to go to keep costs down.

I never ask -or do- someone to do something for me that I would not gladly do for them.
This garbage episode is asinine.

I had the same thing happen with the guy across the lane from me. I put my bag next to his in the winter. Not on his property but at the edge of the lane. Figured it would save the G men some steps. Couple hrs later I can see where the bag has been thrown and it skidded in the snow up against my garage. It was a WTF moment. Told my next door neibour about it, he said the guy was a goof. About a week later we got about 3" of snow. So I got the snow blower out and moved all the snow from my place, the neibour's across the lane, the next door neibour's and the neibour next to the goofs place and blew all the snow up against his gate. When snow is moved like that the crystals reline and it hardens sort of like concrete. The goof only owns a shovel. Never had a problem with the garbage bags since. :)

We tend to put the rubbish bags together so the guy doesn't have to do as much running. I've never really noticed if it's outside my place or not. I don't really care where it is + it's gone in a few hours.

Rubbish man's system is a guy goes ahead and tends to group them up in a pile anyway, then the truck arrives and they get thrown on. They tend to be fit young guys getting fitter rugby style.

I think OP should invite the whole neighborhood to use his place as the local garbage bag dropoff spot.

recycled sixtie 07-01-2013 04:27 AM

I see the anger some of us have towards neighbors and I have been guilty of it too.
However being angry at the neighbors raises the blood pressure and creates discomfort. I tend now to let things go as our neighbors are mostly 60 and 70 year olds. In our city for instance if a neighbor's dogs are barking too much I can phone the City and they will give the owners a warning and the complaint remains anonymous. This I have done.

I have taken this thread into more serious doodoo with dog poop which I take issue with. In our back lane is grass which we must maintain. If a dog poops on our back lane and the owner does not pick it up they get asked to pick it up. This kind of sheet I do not take.:) Some people Mike consider garbage to be the equivalent of dog poop-not in my backyard.

Shakespeare said much ado about nothing. Some others would disagree!

I guess I just dont really understand why you would put your garbage on someone elses property. I do think the guy responded poorly. But My neighbors keep there stuff on there property and I on mine. I dont like neighbors and live on a 5 acre parcel so I dont have to deal with them unless I have to. Thats not an option for some folks. I have quickly learned 5 acres is not enough I think I need 15 to isolate myself enough from other peoples ideas of yard art and what should be "saved" for a rainy day etc.

mikeesik 07-04-2013 04:46 PM

Well tomorrow is Garbage Day and my neighbor has made some changes.
His bags are now Lime Green with a yellow tie and he made a Garbage Buggy. It'll fit 4 large bags and his new plastic can.
He planted a Spruce tree to border his yard to mine.
The Garbage is now to the left of the tree and I imagine acts as a wall between us.

Unbelievable but entertaining at the same time.
Man!

Right there is your problem Mike - assuming your beliefs on others. See - it is not a problem for you to have your neighbors use 'your' curb to put their trash, but that's doesn't necessarily mean others feel the same way. That presumption is obviously not true.

Have you done a study / cost analysis to see how much the sanitation company would actually save by eliminating ONE stop? I think that 'savings' would be negligable. And consider that the sanitation workers get paid by the hour -- if they finish their work in half time time, they get paid half their salary. Would you like it if your work did that to you?

Honestly, I would object to you putting your trash on my property, especially if you didn't ask me first. How would I know you aren't putting toxic waste in your bag, which, if it leaks out, will ruin my grass, and possibly leech into my water supply? How do I know you aren't putting the remants of a crystal meth lab in those bags -- and if the authorities find that, I become suspect #1?

The fact that your neighbor went to great lengths to put up a barrier my indicate that the problem lies not with him, but perhaps with his next door neighbor. If the shoe fits...

Your garbage belongs on your curb. Don't worry so much about saving the world one garbage stop at a time.

I understand.
Especially if body parts end up on his graceland.
You serious?
You must worry about saying hello to people?
wtf?

john70t 07-04-2013 06:52 PM

I spend every other trash day messing around with the neighbor's garbage, but in a good way.

They'll pile it high with the lid sticking up, other trash on the ground next to it, and expect the garbageman to pick it all up.
The city won't even stop for those cans, and I sure don't want to see them left on the street for a whole week.
Move stuff around, pack it, or switch over a bag just takes a minute.

Done. Everybody happy. Next.

(fwiw- These are rolling containers, machine collected. Paying for individual bag pickups is different)

Mike - yes I am serious. I don't know what's in your trash -- forget the body parts -- but if something leaks out and ruins my lawn -- that I work hard to maintain, I'd be quite pissed if your bag leaked -- the one that you put on my property without asking me.

Or - better yet -- we have racoons in my neighborhood -- if they decide that your garbage is their dinner, they will tear open your bags and make a mess -- who gets to clean that up?

True story that happened to me --- I live next to an elementary school. In the afternoon, people park up and down the street, and many folks will either turn around in my driveway, or sometimes block my driveway by parking infront of it. On garbage days, sometimes I will find a discarded candy wrapper, an empty cup, or some scrap in my garbage can. While I don't like people blocking me, the others, I will give them a pass.

HOWEVER, one day I came home, and when I went to take in my garbage can, and there was a 'present' inside -- a FULL dirty diaper half opened. I assume one of the people waiting for their beloved child had a youngin' that needed changing. Oh - did I mention that the crap had oozed out of the diaper and was all over the inside of my garbage can? Guess who got to clean up that mess?

You claim you wouldn't do something to someone that doesn't bother you -- but that attitude doesn't ask, "Would others be offended by my actions, even if I am not offended by them?"

And no - I don't worry about saying hello to people -- but when it comes to putting something on my property - get off my lawn.

You all realize that the area next to the street, between the sidewalk and the street, is not "your lawn" or your property, right?

But, it seems pretty easy to set your garbage out in front of your house.

Excellent point. Looking forward to you mowing that area that borders my property then. See you soon.

Tobra 07-05-2013 11:11 AM

I am doubtful that the issue is with Mike.

I think the neighbor going to these lengths indicates a certain level of mental disease.

Yes, I made an "Excellent point." One that you do NOT understand.

That area is public property, and the city can still require you to maintain it. In fact, the city can plant a tree there and then require you to trim the tree, not just to mow the grass.

Why not call your own city and ask before posting again?

BGCarrera32 07-05-2013 01:13 PM

Oh my, you twisted that around nicely. I am well aware of how easements work and the city code I live within. The "point" is just because it is technically city property does not give you the right to drop your crap on it, set up a lemonade stand, or park your car on it for sale. At the very least it is rather discourteous to the owner that borders that property, unless you know them well or asked first.

Grow up.

No twisting except in your childlike mind. Yes, it might be discourteous, but you kiddies should try to get the facts straight. It is not his property. And he does not own the cans, and it is not theft of services or any of the other idiotic comments made here.

Grow up.

daepp 07-05-2013 01:37 PM

I think Z Man nailed it.

Plus, I've never given a thought about my garbage. I just put it in front of my house. And my neighbors know they can use my cans without asking if there is available room.

Coming on 15 year 9/19 - no problems so far!
