My vote is fixed blade with a good guard. Until he is comfortable and has developed proper handling technique the guard will protect him from poor grip and sliding his hand down onto the blade.
If you go locking blade make sure it's not of a type that has too strong a release so he's not forced to release it in a way that the blade collapses on him. FWIW my first knife which I still own was fixed blade with a guard.

Oh yeah, the man card - I don't know what happened to my knives. I used to have a serious pig sticker that Tarzan would have approved of, a pretty Al Mar folder, a brace of throwing knives, a couple of Opinels, a Buck, some Leathermen, a bunch of Swiss Army knives, etc. I cannot seem to find any now, but the Leatherman (which I'll give him too) and the Swiss Armies. And the switchblade. I think I may buy myself a knife.
P.S. Turns out a friend of mind now runs SOG. So I looked at their stuff. Too tacticool for my taste. |

Actually my wife would kill me if I bought another knife... maybe I could hide it in a friends garage? PM me if your friend can get any deals on factory seconds etc.

FWIW, some of us (knife knuts) like to refer to folding knives as "already broken".
They're fun to play with and convenient to have in the office, etc. But if you want reliability and durability, buy a fixed blade.

I like Kershaw knives. The leek is a serious knife.

Can I hide it in your garage? But seriously... that is a bit much of a knife for a 14 year old to take camping... But I did bookmark it with my Amazon account. ![]()

Oh my, those mcusta knives are works of art. I would hate to leave one of those with the TSA because I forgot to pack it with my checked luggage.

I highly recommend the Kershaw Skyline
Amazon.com: Kershaw Skyline Knife with Textured Black G-10 Handle: Sports & Outdoors for the price, its a great little knife. I have a few of them. Compared to my spyderco paramilitary 2 it feels like a toy. however, its sharp, light, moderately safe lock, fun to flick (maybe too fun), and cheap enough that if its lost no big deal You used to be able to get them at wahlmart but im not sure if they are still available there im guessing they want fixed blade or locking because they are going to be doing bushcraft stuff....like fire sticks that requiring some hammering? You might want to find out because a heavier-duty knife might be a better option

Kershaw Blackout here. I have several, in fact.
I really love my SOG multi-tool though. But 'lil man might not be a fit for a knife that will cut off a finger, haha. I'd stick with a cheap knife for now, like a Boker or Gerber. |

Plenty of good advice, and some not so good advice LOL. Whatever you get him have it engraved on the handle "Camp etc 2013" so he can remember in the future how his dad give him this knife back in 2013 when they were actually legal and what a great camp...
