M compliments to the cost accountant

Edit - My compliments not M compliments

Just bought el-cheapo toilet paper at Walmart and the cardboard tube the paper was rolled onto was about 3/8 inch larger in diameter than the traditional size.

First they jack with my ice-cream, taking the 1/2 gallon size slowly down to single serving size of 1.5 quarts and now I only get two "shots" out of a roll of TP.

Really?

Many brands have cut the width just a bit too.

I can't wait to see how they make cereal boxes smaller while trying to make them look the same size. Figure the inner bag will keep getting smaller as the cardboard stays the same.

When cereal boxes first started shrinking I sent a nasty-gram to Quaker. The response was that their surveys showed that most customers preferred smaller quantities over a price increase.

Scary thing is the amount of people that will agree with that and not understand what it really means.

They mix a lot of air into the ice cream now, too.

Hm. And here I thought my horrendous flatulence was due to burgeoning lactose intolerance. Now I can just blame the added air!

I hear you. I had to move up to the tub size just to have enough to make a decent malt. i also feel better about myself because rarely do I now finish the entire package. Same thing with wine - felt guilty about polishing off a750 ml bottle very night so I went with the 1.5 liter bottle and hardly every drink more than half. Drinking problem solved.

I do all the shopping for my domicile.

I'm not a coupon clipper but I do my due diligence researching the best buys. That's the only re-course you have as a consumer.

Also I learned long ago - there's nothing wrong with taking something back for a refund or exchange if as a consumer you are unhappy. Again - your only recourse as a consumer is to expect only the best. Which is their goal as well.

The Internet has opened up a lot of markets to the consumer and if you are not taking advantage of that you are probably missing out.

I know eBay gets some negative press but I use it myself successfully to purchase items for home and work.

Thanks for pointing out the larger tube size, Bob....I never would have known. Sneaky bastids!

Yep, the core gets bigger, and the width gets shorter. We had some old packages of TP stuffed in the back of a cabinet. I pulled it out and the core was a lot smaller and the roll was much wider. The new rolls are called "double rolls" or "triple rolls" yet they have less paper than a single roll of just a decade ago.

I can remember MAD magazine doing a feature on that subject (quite) a few years ago, at the end it came in an envelope.

Apologies to all cost accountants offended by this, but they are the bane of my work-life too. Absolutely impossible to implement a strategy if the only view is cost containment.

"Grow a market? What will it cost, what will it save?" Sometimes you have to break an egg to make an omelet...

Nice example I once heard:

Take a guy that is about 25% overweight an present him independently to a doctor and a cost accountant for a solution. The doctor will put him on a diet, the cost accountant will chop a limb off.

Well, you're shopping at the financial arm of the people's republic of china. Communists in Asia encourage the proletariat to wipe with their empty left hand. USA walmart shoppers are being prepared for the left hand switch.

Also, not to parf this up, but where you spend your money is the most globally powerful decision you can make. Choose wisely.

Dial makes theirs ergonomically shaped now. NOT, they dish out the center to make them smaller.

What about tissues being turned up side down in the box? Purposely I say. You have to dig into the box to grab the tissue and usually come out with a handful GRRRRR.

And the marketing folks are just as bad if not worse. Poland Springs water advertises they use 30%, (or what ever number it is), plastic for making the cap to be green. NOT, it's 30% more profit for the company.
