Yes the first time I went to Phoenix over 20 years ago and I went down to the swimming pool. You could see the oil slick on top of the water from the swimmers' sun tan lotion. And yes it did smell like coconut. Yes I agree with the above- olive oil for cooking. I am sure those swimming pool pumps are well lubricated.

Several years ago I went to a party at a friend of a friend's house. The homeowner proudly showed my his new hot tub. It had a oil slick and a ring around the tub.

Coconut oil has natural anti-biotics, anti-viral. It also makes for a great massage oil and leaves the skin very smooth and glowing. Non-staining and doesnt get sticky or dry out.

Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat, including the United States Food and Drug Administration,[2] World Health Organization,[3] International College of Nutrition,[4] the United States Department of Health and Human Services,[5] American Dietetic Association,[6] American Heart Association,[7] British National Health Service,[8] and Dietitians of Canada.[9]

Coconut oil contains a large proportion of lauric acid—a saturated fat that raises blood cholesterol levels by increasing the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.[31]

i bought a jar from Trader Joes. i used it. works just like cooking oil. but it makes everything taste like a hint of coconut. nothing too strong..but you definately know it is coconut oil.

i wiped it on my cast iron pans for a season coat. should be interesting next time i put the heat to them. like a trip to the islands.

and for future reference. coconut oil in it's gel form, turns to liquid form super easy..so it will leak out of the jar, and all over all of your gear in your backpack in about 3 seconds flat.

my brother was a walking talking black bear lure. hahah..glad he was the one with the pistol.

In addition, coconut oil has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. On a more superficial level, meanwhile, coconut oil is thought to help strengthen mineral absorption, which is important for healthy teeth and bones, and can also help improve the condition and appearance of the scalp, hair and skin when ingested or topically applied.

That was the hydrogenated coconut oil.

Once a Villain, Coconut Oil Charms the Health Food World

According to Thomas Brenna, a professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University who has extensively reviewed the literature on coconut oil, a considerable part of its stigma can be traced to one major factor.

“Most of the studies involving coconut oil were done with partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which researchers used because they needed to raise the cholesterol levels of their rabbits in order to collect certain data,” Dr. Brenna said. “Virgin coconut oil, which has not been chemically treated, is a different thing in terms of a health risk perspective. And maybe it isn’t so bad for you after all.”
I use a mixture of sesame oil and coconut oil in preparing brown rice when serving Indian dishes. It really makes a flavor difference, but I probably end up doubling what I would have used with butter or even olive oil alone.

sure - it's great but not nearly as good as synovial fluid

that's what you should be selling, Mike!

I don't know what the fuss is about...

Conclusion
Coconut oil is probably not as bad as once thought, but it’s no “miracle” food either. It is probably safe to use it in reasonable amounts to replace other oils in the diet, and doing so may have a favorable effect on lipid profiles; but it’s not clear whether that will actually reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. There is no justification for adding it to the diet on top of the usual consumption of other fats. There is no credible evidence to support any of the many health benefits claimed for using it as a supplement.
