Soooo, this 911

So after months of looking I found this guy Porsche : 911 coupe in Porsche | eBay Motors and while sitting here at lunch I'm finding it difficult to resist the urge to just start making grabby hands at the scream and shouting give me the keys.

I talked to the guy and I'm going to go see it tomorrow down in Cerritos. It's hard now that the emotional irrational want it now feelings have all but taken over and I'm doing best to keep a level head. Half of me wants to make an offer on the spot in fear that someone will buy it by tomorrow but the other half is pleading to at least see the car first.

What do you guys think? I'm thinking as long as it tracks straight when I drive it salvage title means squat to me. Anybody in LA want to ride along and smack some sense into me when I fall in love at first sight?

I wouldn't go nuts over it. It looks like it's been around the block many times, what with five owners. Ridden hard, put up wet. Take more time and you'll find a better one. Just 2c.

Oh man, the images in that ad had me laughing really hard. I mean honestly.

Hmmm what would be a reasonable price for that one something like ~15k? The only completed sale I could find of a 40th 911 was for 42k granted it was a clean title 34k miles.

Positives
+ Make great track cars
+ No more worrying about those pesky door dings
+ Can be a good value

Negatives
- Some insurance companies won't cover
- If insured, you pay full costs based on normal title pricing
- Selling a salvage title car always a bit more tricky
- Unless you can validate the reason and quality of repair, many unknowns

I would never buy from a dealer. Those cars are well into private party territory in terms of price. You can save at least 10% buying private party and usually get the records as well, something dealers usually do not include.

There are a LOT of grey 996 in this area. I would do a very thorough search and only pick the best. It is a buyer's market.

I love that feeling of getting excited about finding a new ride. unfortunately it can cover clear thinking and lead to regrets later.

Someone here on P P searched for and bought a really fine maroon over tan 996 from a private seller and got a sweet one for a good price.

Maybe someone will give us a link to provide some inspiration.

The car with the salvage title is not worth the money. If I were in the market, I would give this car a very serious look:

Run away. Look at the pictures. that should be enough to make you look for a different one. It's been hit in the right rear and not repaired very well.

There are 5 pictures of the seats but not one whole picture of the damaged quarter panel. The one that is there showing a bit of it appears to have a dent just behind the door. If you look at the picture of the exhaust there are 4 things wrong that you can see. Exhaust clamp on left is missing metal and appears to be out of place by a inch or more. Panel behind pipes is chewed on looking. Why? repaired badly? made to fit again? Pipes are not equal. There are bends in one that are not in the other. They should be smooth and the same on both sides, not having a bunch of small bends in them. Now the rear end. Why replace the bumper but not fix or repair the deck lid? Now look at the new bumper. Tail lights on one side are out, other side they are in (bottom edge). Now look at the bottom edge of the bumper. It curves under the car to the right and the exhaust tip on the right is either different than the left one or it's rotated.

If the guy is proud of his "repair job" as to see pictures of the accident.

I'd want to look this car over very carefully on a hoist/frame machine with someone who knows them a lot better than me before I signed the cheque.

I understand that. I prefer a coupe as well. The point is that for the money there are better cars out there. If the LN engineering IMS bearing is in, that is a big plus when considering price. If the update has not been done, I suggest negotiating with the cost of the IMS solution installation in mind. If you are a pca member, keep in mind that there are classifieds on their site. Even if you are not, the individual chapter newsletters are available in pdf form. I have seen some good deals (well cared for, not just price wise) porsches in those classifieds.

Yeah GWN thanks. The one thing I did notice but didn't really want to see was the bottom of the bumper as you pointed out seems to curve in unevenly on the passenger side. Didn't even see the tail light issue.
