Would You Support Assisted Suicide in Your State?

Motion's Dying thread has me thinking again about this matter.
The older I get the more positive it looks to me, as well as those around me of similar age.
A long-time tennis partner (MD in Calif.) had a pact w/colleagues...
Just wondering what PPOT thinks.

True Liberty cannot exist if the state can deny you the freedom to die when you choose.

Interesting topic. I understand the point/desire, especially in certain circumstances. I don't think anyone can actually stop you if that's what you want.

I don't think I could actually do it myself or help someone else (for religious reasons mostly, but it would also be extremely difficult emotionally).

I guess I feel like it should be personal choice, so I would support legislation for it.

I am in absolute agreement. Life is for living. If I am half dead there is no quality of life. Then give me the lethal injection. It may come to the point where the small population of young folks has to support a large population old folks in the old folks homes - it is not sustainable. It is just a question of time.....

Can one support suicide and be pro-life?
I guess you could argue that one is murder - but both are disallowed in the Christian faith. Maybe my question should be, Can a Christian support suicide?

My father is in a nursing home in Idaho, dying a cell at a time from a massive stroke he had six years ago.

As a citizen of Oregon, I have the right by law, and you bet I support it.

I think this is a very personal, religious and moral topic. But it is very private. Though I would not share my opinion on this in public, I certainly understand why folks choose this.

Suicide saddens me, when it is due to a mental condition. I hate the thought of a Human Being suffering so much from something and being so alone that death is the preferred path. I just don't like to think of lonely people who feel no hope.

Here is an interesting statistic for you I heard the other day. The highest rate of suicides is in 80-84 year olds(men?). People are doing it themselves. Once you are in the old folks home you have to hand over your spoons and meds....

How would this work? Could you bring him to OR?...would he qualify immediately or have to wait?...if so, for what would he have to wait...state citizenship?

This type of situation angers me.

about your situation.

nice sounding statement, but think it through.

does this mean a cop must stand by with thumb up ass while a depressed 19 year old jumps off a bridge?

and in an age of socialized medicine the line between assisting and coercing could get very blurry.

Nah, wouldn't work for a lot of reasons; he's lost all faculties, he's not an Oregon citizen, and the requirements are extremely stringent for assisted suicide, as they should be. Lots of hoops to jump through to make sure that you are the one making the decision, that you have a terminal illness and your quality of life is going to deteriorate, and you are mentally competent to grasp what you are doing.

Have Medicare and Medicaid been coercing seniors into suicide in Oregon?

best answer and right off the bat too

Orygun has it and I support it for this reason - it is very hard to do however, and many suffer for months and then die without assistance

I'd support legal suicide, but who are they gonna charge with the crime?
