Why can't Tebow make it in the NFL?

New guy just started in our office. Another D1 hero who had everything to make it in the NFL... except speed. You can have the complete package but if you can't function at NFL speeds then you are going to need to learn how to tie a tie and write a resume.

So what's the thought on Mariota? Another Tebow-ish running quarterback who won't make it in the NFL, or a bigger Russell Wilson who will?

as for tebow himself, IMO he is yet another product of the trend of big tough running QBs in college that dont amount to much in the NFL, because the NFL is so much bigger, faster, and is a passing league. the running QB is dead in the NFL, the defense is just too quick and too athletic. you need pinpoint accuracy, and good intellect to play QB in the NFL, not athleticism and ball protection skills, thats what you have running backs and tight ends for.

In 2011, a young Tim Tebow with very little NFL experience, and without the benefit of an off-season training camp, took over a one and four broncos team and won seven of the next 8 games with 6 in a row. He took them to the to the playoffs that year where they won the wild-card game. The eventually lost to the patriots who went to the Superbowl.

Since then Tebow have improved his skills, his experience, and his knowledge of the game.


He mentioned that NFL QBs need "good intellect".

Tebow was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American for the second year in a row in 2008.
Tebow became just the fourth UF football player to achieve Academic All-America recognition in consecutive seasons. He was also named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the SEC coaches after the 2008 season.
He graduated with a 3.66 GPA, not easy to do with his schedule.

Sure the defense is fast and quick in the NFL. QBs have to be quick too. Tebow runs the 40 in 4.77. Not bad for a guy 6'3" and 245#
Tom Brady, the best QB in the league, runs it at 5.28 seconds.
That kid from the sea chickens, Wilson is his name i think, runs it in 4.55. just a tick faster than Tebow.
Payton Manning is considered a pretty good quarterback, he's won plenty of games and thrown a lot of touchdowns. He runs the 40 in 4.8 seconds, just a tad slower than Tebow.

Brady and Manning would be in trouble if they had to run. Their arm and accuracy more than make up for their slow feet though. Who knows, maybe Tebow has figured out how to improve his passing skills.

Russel Wilson, like Tarkenton, is a bit of an anomaly: they both are/were masters of extending the play behind the line of scrimmage, then moving forward somehow without great collisions.

That is the gift, the reason for their greatness (and they both are).

I hope Mariota doesn't follow in the steps (pun intended) of RGIII, rather subscribes to the Wilson model. I think he is smart enough. There is no such beast as a running QB in designed plays in the NFL, at least not for long.

Tebow? Great talent, better than great in college, where you can run with the skills he possesses. I hope Kelly finds a way to harness and use Tebows talents.

As a Washington state resident, I am a Russ Wilson fan. That being said, the advantage of a guy like him is that he knows when to hold and throw, knows when to scramble and throw, and knows when to cut and run. Above all else, he knows how to get down and out of harms way. He doesn't take the beating that many of the running QBs do. That's a good sign for his longevity.
That being said, having a guy like Lynch to hand it off to and playing behind the best defense in the leauge doesn't hurt either.

I think that's what Tim Tebow has lacked, is the supporting cast and the uncanny decision making that makes a guy like Wilson stand out.
