anyone have a Mercedes G-Class?

i like them. but know nothing about them. i know they are capable off road. super capable, but if i had to guess, i cant imagine a more under utilized off road rig than the G-Class. hmm, maybe a hummer 2..or 3

are there good years and bad years? they holding value?

great rigs!

awesome rigs, a true go anywhere vehicle, most will not ever see their full capability, unless you have to jump a curb to get a Latte in Hollywood! LOL

I had an oldie - 1980 - purchased, drove, and sold it for what I paid for it ($15k) a number of years ago. the older ones - like pre-92 were a lot of the inline -6 versions of the classic benz engine. Mine was a 280, they also made a 320 and numerous diesel versions. After 92 they imported the v-8 into the US and popularity really took off.

Now, you can get early ones for $30k, or newer ones for $80k +++.

great vehicles, terrible gas mileage 12-13mpg regardless of in town or hiway - full time 4x4 assures you of that.

nothing NOTHING is better off-road except maybe a Unimog

go for it

Very expensive vehicle to purchase, fuel and maintain. They are tough and very cool, though.

I've always loved them.

They are the ultimate 4x4 statement IMO. If you can afford one? Go for it.

EDIT: That's a BIG "IF"

About that G-class Mercedes. In 1982 I test drove one in Germany because I wanted a smaller 4-wheel drive, 4 door car. At the time the price was about $25,000.-. I learned the only Mercedes parts are engine and transmission. The body and 4WD was made in Austria by another company. When I returned to the US I test drove a Landcruiser. At the time you could have it for $13,000.-. At half the price the Landcruiser was much more comfortable to ride in. The interior was much more civilized and the engine a lot quieter. And above all the brand new Mercedes body rattled a lot. The Lancruiser not at all. The G-Mercedes reminded me more of a Landrover. End result: I bought the Landcruiser, and, after about 700,000 miles I still have it with no major repairs, and first, unopened, engine an transmission!

I have had several, G500 and G55, the latest being a 2009.
The only problem experienced more than once were window lift motor failure.
They are a typical Mercedes ride, stiff suspension and firm seats.
Replacing tires can be costly and they devour gas.

I have a friend who had a grey market G-wagon with OM606 diesel, (DOHC turbo), this engine in the cars is a bullet. In the G-wagon, it was pretty ho-hum. I drove it, not impressed with any aspect of it for a street vehicle. I'd rather have a really late model Land Cruiser any day of the week, it's twice the vehicle. I know someone in Europe with a diesel TLC that's a couple years old...now that is a rig to covet. The MB is all bling, really a POS to drive on pavement.

I want one, I'd love to put some proper off road tires on it and drive it around covered in mud.

Or you could get an aslmost new German Army Mercedes G-wagon that they intend to leave behind in Afgahnistan next year when they leave for good. They will sell them for scrap value because returning and them costs more than buying new ones. And they are a bullet proof version!

Or maybe you prefer the Canadian Army version:

Or the Dutch Army type:

Or the one that the US Marines use:
