Review: The Eagles concert Seattle
Freaking amazing.
If you are a fan or on the fence, do yourself a favor and go. It could be your last chance. I saw them in the late 70's, I can honestly say the sound better now. The harmonies, sound system, guitars and sound techs, everything was dialed in. Joe Walsh was hammerin it and better than ever. He killed on Funk 49. A local review from the Seattle Times. I saw them play here in Greenville a year or two ago.
My wife and I left about half-way through the concert.

Gotta wonder if Auto-tune technology helps these older bands keep their sound together. Wasn't around "in the day" and would explain why they sound even better now.

It's been hit and miss for me seeing my favorite bands from my youth these days, in their twilight years. Some are better than ever, having matured as musicians and likely having slowed down on the rock star party lifestyle a bit. Others really suck, likely because they probably always have, and I've slowed down on my rock fan, party lifestyle a bit.

Always have been a Joe Walsh fan. Saw some of his tours back in the day. I have issues with Don Henley though, so he won't get any of my money.
The auto tune comment is an interesting point. It is so easy to implement live these days. |

I always liked the Eagles but never, with the exception of the long version of "I Can't Tell You Why" really got it.

Auto-Tune - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It can be used as an effect, or it can be used to correct the pitch of a singer who can't really sing. It has been standard issue in the studio since the 90's, and many famous pop stars are auto tuned both in the studio and live because they can't carry a tune in a bucket. It is especially useful for groups that are doing multiple part harmonies. If you listen to current CSN (which isn't autotuned) it can be fairly horrific as Crosby doesn't really have it any more. I don't know if the Eagles use it in the studio or live, but a lot of people do. I don't have a problem with it as an effect, I do think it is disingenuous to use it as a crutch. We're actually going to do a demo of this in my TEDx talk. |

And even with Auto-tune, Dave Matthews can't sing to save his life. Maybe there should be a disclaimer on the concert tickets (kind of like an ingredients and nutritional info on food labels) "Warning: this concert has be artificially modified with Auto-tune." Of course the same would have to be said for a digital mix board...

I saw Henley in a concert a few years back, ok, maybe six years ago, I like his music, he was good, but then he got into his political rant on stage and got booed.

OK. Maybe I'm missing something. I agreed with you. Did you see the +1 in my post?

I guess if the audience assumed or was led to believe that the speech would be done from memory.
Not sure that analogy really fits. |

Auto-tune is the modern tool to replace lip-sync for live shows when singers sound lousy live. They run the nasty, out of tune singer through the device and it "fixes" the errors and sounds pitch correct but it is Stepford technology. When I go to see a live show I want a live show, warts and all. No stinking backing tracks, no auto-tune, no lip-sync please. Save the recorded tracks and studio magic for the CD. If you are unable to sing live, why would you choose to do live shows?
I don't know if the Eagles use auto-tune but I do know those boys can still sing and they work very hard on their vocal harmonies. I saw them a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl and the show was great.

Saw them a month or so ago here in PGH. Always like Joe Walsh (saw him solo last summer here--great show) but was never a big Eagles fan. I have to say that I left impressed. They sounded great--played a great set, and Joe was playing near my side of the satge--so that was nice as well.
The yuppies behind me were another story though--(2) idiot couples drinking mixed drinks and talking about wanting to "rock out" made me wonder if they knew they were coming to see the Eagles and what the mjaority of their music is actually like.

Saw them last night in Cincinnati -- fantastic show. I'm a huge Eagles fan, and an even bigger Joe Walsh fan, and as good as the Eagles sounded, Joe definitely stole the show. They played Funk 49 and Life's Been Good, and Rocky Mountain Way was one of the encores.
Pretty cool that the band played 3 of his solo songs, and none of Henley's or Frey's solo stuff... ![]()
