Going to try to upright the Costa Concordia tomorrow

After almost two years of planning and working on it a complicated salvage operation is about to begin Monday morning .

Trying to upright the Costa Concordia From where it's been resting for the past 20 months.
Quite an engineering feat to say the least.
The operation will be on live webcams but they say could take 8-10 hours if all goes as planned.
Should be something to see.

Actually they used the same method to raise some ships (who's names escape me) in Pearl Harbour in WW2. One it worked on and the second slipped into deeper water which is a possibility in this case too.

Once they raise it, what do they do with it? Send it to India to be scrapped?

First look for the two missing bodies, then scrapped.

Yea, that will be a REAL boring real time video.

I am sure Discovery or Nat Geo or maybe PBS will have a doccumentary on the entre operation. That will be interesting.

During the process of righting the ship, at some point does gravity take over or is the entire process controlled by cranes?

I think gravity is always working. Pretty hard to turn it off.

From the looks of it, they appear to be moving, albeit extremely slowly...estimated 12 hour project to right it.

Watch here

Yep, that is about as exciting as I thought.

It does make it clear they have rotated it some. Time lapse will be more interesting.

Yes they have to rotate it 66 degrees and so far only 3.
The 8-10 hours prediction will certainly be extended as once they start they cannot stop.
I maybe should have posted " Going to try to upright the Costa Concordia this week "
