EZ Pass being tracked.

E-ZPasses Get Read All Over New York (Not Just At Toll Booths) - Forbes

Basically the city is tracking EZ Pass in locations other than toll booths.

The devices are being used in ways other than their original purpose.

The city claims to be using the information for traffic analysis which is really not a bad thing.

But it's not been/being disclosed that they are tracking in places that the consumer is not expecting.

I can see the benefit but I don't like it.

Too tempting to abuse.

The paranoia is strong with this one Obiwan!

Seriously...what will they learn from the information obtained from law abiding people? We want terrorism to go away, but as we all know...personal freedoms go with it.

Here in Houston, they are using cell phone tracking technology to estimate the speeds of vehicles on the Interstates. Supposedly they aren't keeping the data, and it is supposed to be anonymous...

How soon will it be that you are sent a text from the police that you were speeding...

Yup. Been doing it for years around here. Used for estimated times/traffic on 287, 95, major highways......

Put yours in the bag when you are not using it if it bothers you, but now they are scanning license plates and will probably use that soon. They use license plate scans for tolls in florida.

Technology marches on......

Always wondered how that worked. I though people logged it in somehow. I'm naive.

In Texas, they would be more likely to use the data, to set the speed limits, at what traffic actually travels at. Raising the speed limits to reflect traffic flow, makes it safer for people like me traveling 55MPH in the right lane, as I'd be able to go 65MPH, or in Texas, 80MPH.

EZ Pass being tracked.

Yea everywhere else would take that number, cut it in half and send a few cops to sit on their asses with radar guns and suck more money out of the public to fund more government stupidity.

I really would love to check out Texas - just depends on job situation... I do like their approach to governance though, generally speaking.

Bull****, at least in my corner of TX.

Only place I've seen that takes old narrow one lane each direction no shoulder no divider no turning lane 55 MPH roads and turns them into nice new wide 4 lane divided safe roads then lowers the speed limit to 40 MPH.

Oddly enough every time they do it we seem to get way more POPO on those roads keeping us even safer.

I'm sure it's just coincidence.

The speed limits in and around houston are mostly 60 with some 65. To get up to 80 or 85, you have to get out into the booneys.

Houston has the worst drivers of anyplace I've ever been. I think it's because we have the best road system. The lanes are wide and the roads have many lanes and are straight. THis means you don't have to pay too much attention and can wander around and people just move out of your way. THe usual method of changing lanes her for many, many people is to put on the turn signal and slowly start changing lanes (whether you're in the lane or not). Often if you honk or they realize that you are there, they will keep coming over figuring that you'll move. It's insanity.

But, the roads are great, the cost of living is great, and the weather really isn't too bad as long as you prefer hot to cold. It's not a bad place to be.

I don't keep mine on the windshield and only get it out for tolls. So Big Brother isn't tracking my ass.

Since it isn't disclosed that they are being used for that purpose I could see there being a lawsuit easily...

From the Houston Transtar traffic map site

Houston TranStar Real-Time Traffic Map

Houston TranStar - About Houston TranStar
Quote:
In 2010, Houston TranStar pioneered the use of traffic monitoring using Anonymous Wireless Address Matching (AWAM). AWAM currently uses anonymous addresses from Bluetooth™ network devices to identify probes and calculate travel times and speeds on instrumented roadway segments. This innovation allows Houston TranStar to provide travel updates to drivers during daily commutes as well as in emergency evacuation situations.

This is one of those cases where government overreach would quickly burn the government.

Toll authorities depend on revenue from tolls and transponders to track traffic flow. If they abuse this and word gets out, people will quickly get rid of the transponders and cut back on using toll roads.

It's not like storing everyone's phone and internet information in a secret database...people can actually do something about it quickly and decisively.

I usually turn my phone off in the car. Won't be using it there anyway.
