PORSCHE Haters: Is it a New England thing?

I had an instance this morning ...the straw that broke the Camels back with me, had to throw this to the PPBT.

Have you ever received, or how much, hatred, snickering, foul comments, or looks because of the P-Car you are driving?

This one really gets me as the people making whatever gestures really have no idea that the Camry or Accord they're making $400/mo payments on is doubly+ expensive as my SC.

The other part, like all of you, this is my passion, and people being haters just makes my skin crawl.

Best example. My wife and I had a great rapport with 2 of our neighbors, both hard working people with a family. Since I got the smoking deal on her Cayenne and my SC in the drive, nevermind making a comment....they have 100% stopped acknowledging us.

I still wave, even when they turn their head. Karma is a biznatch

Maybe it is all the Yankees up there. I have never ever had a snide remark about my Porsches. After 39 years of driveing a Porsche it has always been positive comments from others.

sounds like you and your wife ought to take the neighbors out to dinner and take the pepper.
find a big parking lot and let them have a nice ride

Just move on. Don't waste your energy thinking about what neighbors think. Just keep on being pleasant with them. You don't get to choose your neighbors. You both deserve your P cars and grow a thicker skin.

Not local to just the NE. Mine isn't even on the road yet (I've spent 3 years rebuilding and am almost there) and I've had quite a few experiences where people get interested to know what kind of car I'm working on and then turn up their noses when I say it's a 911. I think most everybody looks at a Porsche as something they can ALMOST have, and that makes 'em hate you all the more.

I learned very early on in Porsche ownership that you will be stared at, especially by little kids, you can not just stop at the gas station and get away without fielding a question or two, and that people will be jealous. The latter all stems from ignorance. Just smile and waive as you pass them during your day and enjoy what you have and have worked to attain.
Half of my neighbors refuse to acknowledge me when I am outside. Three Porsches and a Mercedes in the drive has a tendency to do that, but you know what, if that is the way they are, I really don't want to be around them in the first place. I just waive as they drive by because I waive to everybody that drives by.

Some parts of New England it is regarded as gauche to show your wealth i guess.
Haters will always hate and they
"really have no idea that the Camry or Accord they're making $400/mo payments on is doubly+ expensive as my SC."

Back in the stone ages of the mid 1970s I took my then fairly new 914 for a drive in the rural parts of Alabama. I stopped for gas in Weogufka, Alabama. Two little boys that looked like extras from the movie Deliverance were at the gas station. I heard one of the boys say to the other, "lookie there, thats a real race car"

I waved at them as I drove off.

If your neighbors are petty enough to not talk to you because of the cars that you own, are those people that you really want to associate with? My next door neighbors are rude trashy people that I ignore, doesn't hurt my feelings any. The neighbors on all other sides are great.

I've personally never received a negative comment about any of the cars that I drive, quite the opposite in fact. I've gotten a lot of "nice car" comments at gas stations, drive thrus, etc. One obnoxious co-worker once made the typical "you must have gotten a raise" comment when I had an XJR, at which point I informed him that for what he paid for his new Subaru Tribeca he could have purchased four of my XJRs. He later tried to sell his Tribeca and buy my XJR but nobody wanted his car.

Good neighborly relationships are too rare these days. I get along great with my neighbors, and if any of them got weird because of a car I bought I'd spend the effort to get them "on board". Often these things are about managing appearances. If you can get them to understand it's about the driving experience, not trying to look cool, it would go a long way towards asuaging that "Oh, too cool for school" attitude.

Unless, of course, you bought it to look cool, in which case you're a douche.

I think many folks see P-car ownership as a) an attempt to push your success into their face and b) every P-car is 4x more expensive than any domestic could have been.

Further, 911's appeared largely similar (identical to most people) from decade to decade for a long time, are typically well maintained (clean). The net result is that they are often seen as a" new Porsche" ($$) by a lot of the general population who only have time or energy to be jealous, ignorant and/or stuck in a mess of their own doing.

I've got thick skin brother! Which is why I keep waving when they turn their head...

But, with them always watching me work on the darn thing you might think they'd think different. Obv not.

To the deliverance kids/914 comment. I did have a neighbors 3 and 5yo kids come trouncing in the yard (he's a super nice guy) and literally stopped, stared, looked at me and said "Mr Sean, thats an awesome racecar"

To me, thats what its all about

Come out to Ca, and they still wouldn't acknowledge you becausue of the piece of crap you drive instead of a new jag or Benz.

Seriously, people who feel that way are really self conscience about what's in your driveway and what others think? Especially the cost comparison to a Camry.

Try pulling in to a gas station in Des Plaines IL. in a Lamborghini. It's as if a space ship has landed.

Anyone who would hate me simply because of the car I drive isn't worth 2 squirts of Chinese cat piss as far as I'm concerned. Lifes too short.

I was driving my 997 across country this summer. I was in the middle of nowhere in Montana, and pulled off at an exit to get a cup of coffee from McDonalds (desperate times call for desperate measures....). It was 6am, and the light was just coming up. I pulled up to order, and one the kids working there was out back with a mop bucket. You could literally see his jaw drop open He put the mop down, opened the door, and shouted inside. But the time I got to the window, 3 more employees were crowded around, smiles all around. The kid who handed me my coffee asked me a few questions about the car. It was fun.

i have had more complements and thumbs up since i got the 930(only a few months) than i EVER had with the 911 (10 yrs), even though if you parked the 911 next to the 930 they look really the same. the 911 is a wide body.
if someone does not like you because of the car you drive, they are not worth the trouble.

i am down south though.
